Notice the two large standing stones fallen at the bottom of this picture. One has CP carved into it and the large stone over the hill has DC using the same size and style of letters. The cairn is on the skyline when viewed from the bottom of the row. The end of the row has no obvious termination. The elevation of the cairn from the bottom of the row is 3 degrees. The true azimuth of the row is 7 degrees giving a declination of 42. A trawl through astronomical objects around Bronze Age times suggests that the star Arcturus would graze the cair...

Hobajons Cross submitted by thecaptain on 6th Aug 2004. Hobajons Cross. This relatively large stone is part of the Butterdon Hill row, and has a simple cross carved into it on the western face. Fice's Well

Fice's Well submitted by KiwiBetsy on 23rd Sep 2006. The well stands surrounded by a low stone wall which was built by convicts (it’s only a very short distance to the prison) in the 19th century. We found Fice’s Well on a very murky Dartmoor day and were probably lucky not to suffer the same fate as John Fitz and his wife. One day they were riding on the moor when the piskies conjured up a thick, impenetrable mist which resulted in the couple being hopelessly lost. For hours they rode in circles unable to find their way off the moor. The ...
