Padstow Cross
Date Added: 7th Dec 2011
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes
Padstow Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 4th Nov 2004. Like so many ancient crosses, this one has been re-shafted. Cast down after the Reformation, the crosses were broken, tossed into hedges or built into walls. The shafts made excellent gateposts or door lintels.

Country: England (Cornwall)

Fenton Luna submitted by Thorgrim on 15th May 2004. Fenton Luna is such a curious name! What does it mean? The well is found in Fenton Luna Lane which winds steeply uphill from the centre of Padstow. The well is behind the low cupboard and a later pump has been added. Both now redundant.

Date Added: 7th Dec 2011
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes

Our Lady of Nance submitted by theendlessbreeze on 11th Jun 2004. Grid Ref: SW870604
Location: Near Mountjoy, Cornwall
As in the case of many holy wells, this one was difficult to find!
From Newquay take the A392 to St Columb Road, past Quintrell Downs and then take the turning to the left just before Mountjoy to Lady Nance. Follow this road and take the first turning to the right down a lane. Here you will find a collection of cottages.
The well is located in some undergrowth just off the lane, to the right of the first house you see.

Merry Maidens (Circle)
Date Added: 17th Feb 2012
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes

Merry Maidens (Circle) submitted by JimChampion on 27th Oct 2006. August 2005. The Merry Maidens under fluffy white clouds. I rediscovered this photo and selectively manipulated the contrast so that you can now see the stones (previously they were too dark). I've uploaded a similar photo to Wikimedia Commons - they need pictures of ancient sites for use on free sites like Wikipedia.

Treslea Cross
Date Added: 7th Mar 2012
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes

Treslea Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 5th Nov 2004. Crosses seem to be very much a continuation of the tradition of standing stones. They were placed as way marks on pilgrims' ways, as boundary markers showing the limits of ecclesiastical land and as places of open air worship. This directly parallels what we know of the purpose of standing stones. Treslea Cross stands at the junction of three lanes near Bodmin.

Trevorgans Cross submitted by enkidu41 on 16th Nov 2004. This cross is not sympathetically placed having regard to the nearness of the A30 but, of course, the road would have been considerably narrower a 100 years ago.

St Buryan (Village) submitted by enkidu41 on 16th Nov 2004. It is possible that this cross may have been adopted as a Market Cross when the parish of St. Buryan was granted a market charter in 1302. The platform is certainly at a focal point of the village.
