Date Added: 24th Sep 2018
Site Type: Pyramid / Mastaba Country: Peru
Visited: Yes on 24th Sep 2018. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 4

Log Text: The civic center associated with the famous "Lord of Sipan" tomb finds. Visible are the large adobe pyramids, and a burial platform. The tombs found in the burial platform remain open and contain simple reproductions of the tomb finds as well as signage describing the tombs.
The pyramids themselves are dramatically eroded, but careful examination shows the adobe brick structure. A nearby museum describes the Moche culture and multiple noble burials, but the finds from the tomb of the "Lord of Sipan" himself are in the museum of the Royal Tombs innearby Lambayeque City. Please visit here as well you show your support of the local village and the vendors who work near the museum.

Sechin Alto

Date Added: 25th Sep 2018
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement Country: Peru
Visited: Yes on 3rd Sep 2018. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 3

Log Text: Sechin Alto is a large and somewhat chaotic site with no signage. Its completely surrounded by mango orchards ("Mangos are money." said our guide.) If you are shown where to climb up on paths and among the sharp edged rock pieces that make up the structure, you can see foundations of rooms, platforms, and an area in the central mound made from piled adobe.
This is a stark and exposed site. Awesome and intimidating.

Qenko

Qenko submitted by Michelledubois on 11th Oct 2011. Near Cuzco is at a site called Qenqo, which is a monstrous rock all carved out with tunnels inside, and the whole upper surface is a maze of sculpted surfaces. The stone is andesite. The "thing" in this photo creates a perfect Puma head shadow 2 times a year. Nobody knows its true purpose.

Log Text: Our guide told us that although salt had been collected hear long before the Spanish conquest, the number and extent of the salt pans seen today are a modern feature. Even in his own lifetime the area of the "works" were dramatically smaller. Having said that, the methodology appears to not have changed for many hundreds of years.

Moray Terraces

Moray Terraces submitted by pab on 7th Nov 2013. Moray craters, Peru. This series of craters was a delight. On the plateau above the Urubamba river valley, there is a series of 4 terraced craters which have been shown to have pre-Inca beginnings. They are up to half a mile across, and over a hundred feet deep in places. What is really fascinating is the fact that, because of their depth and orientation, there can be a temperature difference of 15 °C (27 °F) between the bottom of the craters and the tops! The craters may have ...
