The Hurlers (C)

The Hurlers (C) submitted by Horatio on 24th Jun 2024. This stone I kept coming back to as a lovely lozenge shape and stood out amongst the more usual upright stones. Apart from its reduced size it wouldn't look amiss on West Kennet Avenue.

Trevelgue Head submitted by AngieLake on 24th Feb 2006. Looking back from the 'island' of Trevelgue promontory fort, along its north edge, towards the eastern barrow, visible to the right of the hotels. It is a particularly nice place to visit in summer, with the pink 'Thrift' and the turquoise sea with its white breakers.

Piskey’s Hall – The Fairy’s Fogou

Piskey’s Hall – The Fairy’s Fogou submitted by coin on 3rd Nov 2013. So... Getting to this site is a welcome voyage, arriving at the gate (higher than a normal one) I read a friendly sign- warning me of a bull... So the landowner obviously doesn't want people visiting this site. Climbing over the gate I am affronted with another welcoming feature- electric fence. Slipping under the offending wire, and edging around the field keeping an eye out for the bull of terror, I approach the mound if earth and stones. When I reach it, I am presented with another electric f...

Boskednan stone circle

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Carn Euny Fogou

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...

Chun Quoit submitted by sem on 16th Jun 2005. The capstone and the horizon. There is a theory that dolmens (or quoits as they are known in Cornwall) were not totally covered in earth but the capstones were left uncovered and were a copy of the horizon. I have manipulated the tones in this shot to show this, but no shapes have been altered.
