Robin Hood's Tump
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 26th Nov 2003
Robin Hood's Tump submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Nov 2003. Robin Hood's Tump SJ575599 - the remains of a bowl or round barrow (National Monuments Record gives it as a bowl barrow), over a possible settlement, not far off the A51 near Tilstone Fearnall.
The access was surprisingly good - on a very wide corner, giving plenty of space for unobtrustive parking. Largely unremarkable, given no burials have been found here, but as I have spent longer, and searched harder trying to find much less, this was a rewarding bump to find!
Given the heavy tree ...

Beeston Castle
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2004
Beeston Castle submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Apr 2004. The remains of the prehistoric hillfort are very hard to detect; the place they are most in evidence are either side of the gatehouse to the outer bailey. This is either side of the main route to the top of the mediaeval castle.
Some of the medieaval walls were actually built using existing earthworks from the earlier fortification to aid defence. These earthworks are most in evidence when the foliage is low.
This picture is taken on the north east side of the entrance, which is on the rig...

Grosvenor Museum
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Museum
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 17th Apr 2004
Grosvenor Museum submitted by TimPrevett on 17th Apr 2004. The Grosvenor Museum in Chester; as per Vicky's comment, do not expect lots of prehistory here. If you come solely with that interest, you will be disappointed.
The Roman collection is, not surprisingly, considerable; the period house is also fascinating, and some natural history is informative. It provided us with a good afternoon's family visit.

Tatton Iron Age roundhouse and pit

Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 25th Mar 2005
Tatton Iron Age roundhouse and pit submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Mar 2005. Tatton Park is under the care of The National Trust but also managed by Cheshire County Council, so even for National Trust members there is a 4 pound admission charge per car. The features of note are all in the Parkland area near the Old Hall , and are easily driven to. I have tried to take a photo of each of the areas where said features would have been, having copied the circle from the mulitmap data onto my own OS map. Without GPS and further information, I've endeavoured to be as accurate ...

Nether Knutsford
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 21st Jan 2006

Nether Knutsford submitted by TimPrevett on 21st Jan 2006. Not a lot to see here. Something for the enthusiast with an active imagination. Allegedly the remains of a round barrow. Can find nothing in the SMR. Arguably, I found a slight raised area to the SW of St Cross Church, N of Branden Drive, with a circular depressed area around it (circled in pic). This was the most convincing thing I could find that there was something here. Just to the W there was a small mound among some trees near the footpath, but I did not find that so convincing. Thoughts a...

West Park Boulder
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature
Country: England (Cheshire)
Visited: Yes on 19th Sep 2006

West Park Boulder submitted by TimPrevett on 19th Sep 2006. Another perspective on the enormous glacial erratic in West Park; it's a shame this hadn't been exposed for millenia like many glacial erratics, as the more I have visited the park the more anthropomorphic features I spot in the stone. Given time this could have developed some folklore - but it just resides in a very pleasant park, and that's it.

Bosley Cloud (1) submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Sep 2006. Bosley Cloud Standing Stone (1) looking SE at twilight this morning. See main entry for details. This is a couple minutes down from the trig point, and the views up here are superb - to the Berwyns and Clwydian ranges, SE Staffordshire (look for the plumes of steam from Rugeley Power Station), to Manchester, Shropshire.

Church Lawton South submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jun 2007. Nine massive glacial erratic stones once formed a stone circle in this field, nearer the road (from left of picture, in front of houses). Few would know that now. I pass by here quite frequently, and smile, telling anyone with me "did you know...". See Paul & Vicky's in depth article.
