Hayden Butte

Hayden Butte submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Dec 2009. Hayden Butte (pronounced bute) has a lot of petroglyphs when you know where to look. All the glyphs are on sides of the mountain facing the sun (ie. south and east - as it seems is the case with most sites). Most are recessed off the paths and are inaccesible due to wildlife and heritage preservation but can be viewed adequately from the paths, and with assistance (ie camera zoom, binoculars). If not used to this environment, be mindful of bobcats, rattlesnakes, cacti and the temperature. It...

Hot Springs (North Carolina)

Hot Springs (North Carolina) submitted by TimPrevett on 19th Apr 2009. The thermal springs originally discovered by the indigenous peoples are still in use today with open air but undercover tubs available to bathe in on a commercial basis. This is right next to the river, with hills all around. It's a great experience, and your pores and skin feel fantastic after an hour in the warm mineral rich water.

Doll Tor

Doll Tor submitted by TimPrevett on 20th Mar 2009. With friends and clients at Doll Tor. I hadn't been to any megalithic sites for months before this - being hired for the weekend to show them a small sample of the wonders of the Peak District just reminded me of my first love of history, and that I actually *need* to visit stones for my wellbeing. There's something about them (as I'm sure most visiting pages know...)

Stanton Moor 1

Stanton Moor 1 submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Mar 2009. With the aid of Paul & Vicky's "Rock Around the Peak" (still unbeatable for THE Peak District megalithic handbook), I made a determined search for this circle last Saturday. Basically, as you head north from the Nine Ladies along the more easterly of the routes, keep your eye open for the first field opening up to the east. Stanton Moor 1 is very close to its perimeter. If you can find Stanton Moor 3 in the other direction from Nine Ladies, then you have a good idea what to look for here. Th...

National Museum of Scotland submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Feb 2009. The entrance to the National Museum of Scotland; I only had 40 minutes to zoom around here before closing (having been distracted by the fantastic Greyfriars Churchyard opposite). What I saw was very good, and very family friendly. Edinburgh is one of the most amazing cities I have been to, so a return visit will be in order sometime!

The Whet Stone (Hergest Ridge)

The Whet Stone (Hergest Ridge) submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Sep 2008. Text from Hanterman: This is not a standing stone as such but a large (2.0m by 1.8m) lump of stone, probably naturaly deposited. From its position atop Hergest Ridge it aquires the most magnificent views to all the known Neolithic and Bronze Age sites in the Walton Basin and Barrows on the surrounding hillsides. though distant some may be. It has many folk tales attached to it from down the centuries. My reason for its inclusion is its alignment with other standing stones on Hergest Ridge and ac...

Broomy Hill Centre submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Sep 2008. Couldn't get close to the stone; some young bullocks were in the field and remained oblivious to our presence, so having popped up over a knoll and observed the situation, I grabbed some shots before ducking out of view again.

Llanerch Stone

Llanerch Stone

Llanerch Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 22nd Sep 2008. The Llanerch Stone - covered in cup marks (not sure if any rings); also thought there could be 2 chevrons and a lozenge shape. The stone is largely covered over to prevent weathering, so we returned the disturbed sods to the stone once we'd had a peep. Had a long natter with the farmers here too, who know of the stone, and regard it with interest, curiosity and keep an eye out for its wellbeing.
