Tenants Hill enclosure

Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 18th Jan 2007

Tenants Hill enclosure submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Jan 2007. A composite of the curious enclosure on Tenants Hill. A beautiful, peaceful spot. Said to be Bronze Age, one wonders what sort of monument this may have been apart from the ambiguous term 'enclosure'. Looking NWW. Boxing day 2006.

Blacknoll Hill submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Jul 2007. The trig point mounting probably the easiest barrow to see on Blacknoll Hill. From there, though, the Five Marys, and numerous other barrows are visible.

Woodman's Cross
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Barrow Cemetery
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 3rd May 2008
Woodman's Cross submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd May 2008. Four bowl barrows overlooking Wool, one mounted by a trig point, a little way north east from Woodman's Cross. Way before I was interested in stones and lumps and bumps, as a young teenager I'd come to this hill to take photos of the trig point against sunrises / sunsets, or stop for a snack on a long walk. Now I know what it was I was really wanting to photo. Coming back years later the barrows were so obvious... they were just part of the hill when I was a kid!

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 3rd May 2008
Woolsbarrow submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd May 2008. There are much wider earthworks in the trees than the obvious mound which makes up the hillfort clearly visible in the centre of the clearing...

St Augustine's Well (Cerne Abbas)
Date Added: 9th Jan 2017
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 28th Dec 2016. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

St Augustine's Well (Cerne Abbas) submitted by ermine on 9th Jan 2005. St Augustine's well in Cerne Abbas is a tranquil place. Walk up Abbey Street and turn into the graveyard - the well is a couple of hundred yards alond the track. The flow is good and was the village's source of drinking water in the last century.
The Abbey nearby is also worth a visit, as well as the nearby Giant hillfigure.

Log Text: Visited in June 2009 first of all on a warm summer's evening and again on 28th December with late afternoon golden sunshine. A very mellow spot - shame we couldn't stop for longer to soak the ambience in.

Tout Quarry Sculpture Park Stone Circle submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Aug 2017. 12/08/17
This circle (more of a 'cove' of stones, I suggest) at Portland's Tout Quarry Sculpture Park was officially opened on June 21st 2017. It's just on the south side of the arterial route at the top of north end of Portland, parking at The Heights Hotel just across the road, or if that's full, parking around the corner to the north of the hotel near The Olympic Rings monument. Not to be confused with "The Circle of Stones" further into the sculpture park.

Woodbury Hill (Dorset)
Date Added: 3rd Jan 2025
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 30th Dec 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Woodbury Hill (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 5th Jun 2005. June 2005. Looking northeast across the Bere valley at Woodbury Hill from Bowcroft Hill. Appropriately for its name the hillfort looks woody, although its interior is under pasture. The hill doesn't look too steep from this angle: it is much more formiddable when viewed from the north and west (from the A31 road).

Log Text: Steep approach from the Bere Regis side, down and up steps bisecting a hollow way. View to the ramparts on the south and north, and cracking views from the path to the east from Bere Wood, looking west.

Broomhill Barrows
Date Added: 3rd Jan 2025
Site Type: Barrow Cemetery
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 30th Dec 2024. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 2

Broomhill Barrows submitted by TimPrevett on 3rd Jan 2025. The tallest, easternmost barrow, just as the track drops downhill heading east towards Bloxworth.
Three surviving round barrows on a spur, following the ridge east from Woodbury Hillfort, near Bere Regis. Situated in dense woodland, the barrows were covered with trees which look to have been cleared during 2024.
The barrows are immediately adjacent the track, and the woods have a very heavy ambience. Quite a walk from Bere Regis or Bloxworth, but very enjoyable.

Log Text: A long walk from either Bere Regis or Bloxworth, surprising to find these having been cleared of trees in the middle of dense woodland.

Long Stone (Minchinhampton)

Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 30th Dec 2009
Long Stone (Minchinhampton) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2009. Sunset 26/12/09 - an unplanned visit to a number of sites in the area.
No maps - just a vague 1970s guidebook - took us a couple hours to locate this having gone from Minchinhampton via Hampton Fields to Tetbury to Avening missing the stone at first by a narrow margin.
Having resigned ourselves to a long barrow this stone was spotted with just a few minutes before the sun went below the horizon.
A very impressive 7 feet tall stone, and make sure to see the smaller stone bisecting the wall ...

Gatcombe Lodge submitted by TimPrevett on 1st Jan 2010. Visited here on Boxing Day 2009 upon recommendation of my Prehistoric England guidebook from the 1970s which made no mention of Royal Estate which locals later told me about.
Ruined remains of a chamber on the more eastern end of the huge long barrow mound, and what appears as quarrying / robbing damage on the north side of the eastern end.
Advanced twilight by the time we got here (having watched sunset from the Long Stone just across the road) so very dark and use of flash imperative (also...

Log Text: Visited on a bright winter day, the stone is slightly up from what has become a parking bay, well outside the last of the three properties in this cul-de-sac. The laurel seen in photos quite a few years back has been kept from swallowing seeing the stone. 10 digit grid reference from the OS app while leaning on the stone is SO 85742 02389, and I know some find it helpful, what3words is alongside.tame.forgot . The stone is well outside private property boundaries, but nevertheless one feels very conspicuous poking around!
