Nine Stones (Dorset)
Nine Stones (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion : Boxing Day 2004. Composite image. A bright sunny morning, but the trees keep this little circle in the shade. Only eight stones are visible: the ninth is being engulfed by the roots of the large beech tree on the left of the picture. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This small circle has some huge stones and some tiny ones, ranging from 90cm to 3.4m. Trees have grown up around the circle almost obscuring it, giving a dark, melancholy air.

Burl suggests stones of differing sizes like this represent sexual symbolism, and are of SW Scottish influence. The most recent time I visited was a few weeks after the summer solstice, and someone had left two small clay objects like elongated dice on one of the stones. The objects had symbols cut into them.

Access: The council has now blocked direct access to the circle from the A35. The bridge over the winterbourne has been removed, the gate is padlocked, and new hedging has been planted across the front of the site.

There is an off road path to the stones. If you park up at the Little Chef just down the road, there is a gate just in front of the building and a path running through the field to the stones.

Note: There is now no direct access from the A35, see the access details

Nine Stones (Dorset) - No access through 2021 into 2022? by TimPrevett on Friday, 15 January 2021
(User Info | Send a Message)
It appears that there is no access to Nine Stones throughout 2021 into 2022 due to a National Grid project to bury electric cables and the removal of pylons through the area - the National Grid Visual Impact Provision Project. The project website says the works are scheduled to complete during 2022.

You may remember the concrete slab-bridge from a very careful crossing of the main road, with difficult parking across the road. You may have used the Little Chef car park and path across the meadow after that concrete bridge was removed. The Little Chef has now gone and a car dealership is in its place.

This project to hide cables and remove pylons (currently) bores across the landscape here, with not only immediate works to for the electricity infrastructure through the location, but compounds and supporting activity, all of which renders zero access to Nine Stones stone circle.

The works across the formerly accessible path is visible in the title photo here; there is notification of a footpath closure here but nothing anywhere about closure of access to this heritage site.

There have been some archaeological finds:

"In April, we completed the excavation of a rectangular enclosure
measuring 64m by 33m. Artefacts discovered in the series of
ditches that define the enclosure have enabled us to date it to
the Bronze Age and suggest it was associated with farming
rather than human settlement.

On a different part of the site we found a cremation cemetery
with a mix of human remains – some stored in urns, others buried
in the ground. We’ve not fully assessed these findings, but early
signs indicate that these also date from the Bronze Age. We will
be using radiocarbon dating to confirm or refine this belief"

Visited on 7/3/19 and the large tree has now been cut right down, only the stump remains.
Access from the village may soon be disrupted as their is some work beginning in the field adjacent to the stones. Apparently they will be burying the electricity cables.

Re: Nine Stones (Dorset) Access from Summer 2018 by TimPrevett on Thursday, 28 June 2018

The former Little Chef is currently under redevelopment; there is no parking there when I went past twice around Summer Solstice 2018. Given there is no access over the brook, now, the best bet will be to park further into Winterbourne Abbas and then pick up the path which goes from the site of the former Little Chef across the field. I'll be keeping an eye on the parking and situation on future visits, though anyone else visiting with a care to feedback in the meantime will be welcome to! :)

The village pub is currently (June 2018) closed so easy parking in its car park. The new building where the Little Chef was looks like it's going to be a car dealership and there won't be any parking there. Actually when I visited someone had thrown a pallet into the ditch by the main road so access would have been easy from there, except you really don't want to be walking alongside the A35!

Nine Stones access now blocked from the A35 by Andy B on Tuesday, 22 January 2013
(User Info | Send a Message)
I am informed that following the cutting down of the large beech tree (two years ago), that overhung the Nine Stones Circle, the council in it’s wisdom has blocked access to the circle. The bridge over the winterbourne has been removed, the gate is padlocked, and new hedging has been planted across the front of the site.

As mentioned below, there is an off road path to the stones. If you park up at the Little Chef, there is a gate just in front of the building and a path running through the field to the stones.

I appreciate that the site is directly on the edge of a very busy A35, but there is now no alternate access for anyone wanting to visit.

We visited on 17th March 2011. Just to confirm what has been mentioned earlier, there is a "Permissive Footpath" to this site accessed from the gate in front of the Little Chef which is on your left immediately you leave the village of Winterbourne Abbas on the A35 heading westwards towards Bridport. There is easy parking at the LC and the short walk across the pasture field alongside the roadside hedge (but on the safe side of it!) is easy but may be inclined to be muddy when wet and/or when livestock are in the field. 3 gates in all from Little Chef to inside the circle, all open easily and no stiles to climb. There is a sign on the gate "To The Nine Stones".

Following the English Heritage works referred to in previous comments, the surrounding vegetation has re-grown but the old tree trunk does look a bit sad! However, as only the base shows in my photos... :-)

Yes , we visited the Circle back in July 2009 on our way back from a lovely day at Lyme Regis.
We glimpsed the Circle as we were driving past it and parked in the lay-bye 30 meters or so down the road opposite and then walked up.As stated above you can hear traffic as it approaches you although you can not see it so a degree of caution is required.

We found the Circle and the general ambience of the area very peaceful and had a calming effect on all.

Its marvellous that these little gems are still available to visit.Children appear to be facinated by the construction

Re: Nine Stones (Dorset) by Anonymous on Wednesday, 23 December 2009
As long as you have the brain that god gave you then the stone circle is relatively easy to access. You simpley park your vehicle in the one lay-bye some 40m metres away on the opposite side of the road to the circle.

As stated by others be mindful as this stretch of the main road is littered with short bends and concealed entrances.

I visited the circle in mid August after visiting the Durdle Door. When you reach the circle cross about 4 wooden beams that spans a little Brook, you then have access to a metal gate which opens into the very small circle.

When i visit these type of locations im always mindful of litter so i always attend with a bag just in case some individuals have been carless (shall we say) with their lunch.

Worth a visit folks.

A 200-YEAR-OLD tree at the centre of worship by druids and witches has been chopped down to size after it became diseased.

The 80ft beech at Winterbourne Abbas has been reduced to a 10-metre stump by English Heritage because of fears it would die and fall over.

The tree has become a dominant feature at the site, famous for the ancient stone circle standing beneath its branches.

Re: Nine Stones (Dorset) by Anonymous on Thursday, 30 October 2008
I was there this past summer (end of June). We looked at the chopped off branches stacked neatly - there was absolutely NO sign of disease whatsoever in any of the branches or in the trunk.

As well, the hedgerow between the highway and the little bridge and gate COMPLETELY obscures the Nine Stones from the view of the highway. There is no sign viewable from the highway, so likely no one will see whatever the nut cases who cut down this tree do next.

Locals are saying that the tree was cut as a warning to the wiggans or others who kept visiting the site.

the trunk is covering most of the one stone - so perhaps Heritage not only thought that the tree could fall down and uproot the stone, but also that the trunk would soon just swallow it up.

Visited here last weekend on the way back from Lyme Regis and after quite a fair walk along the side of the very busy road we finally reached this wonderful den of energy and tranquility. As soon as you cross the little bridge over the ditch and go into the circle the amazing energy of the place just hits you. It feels very male and so does the giant guardian beech tree that stands over it. Despite the noise of the traffic it was so easy to tune into the stones and when you touch them its like electricity going through your veins, although sadly the stone nearest to the road seemed very dead. Somebody had drawn a big anti-clockwise swastika in the ground in the middle of the circle so I drew a circle of life to try and balance it out. A wonderful place.

My first ever prehistoric site. I remember my father driving past when we were children. At night time the whole stretch of road was very atmospheric (and scary) with the woods alongside the road- I was only about 7 at the time.

A pleasant and calm little place, despite the traffic racing past. The surrounding wood is beautiful, and lovely longhorn cattle in next field when we visited. Someone had chalked (!) symbols on the stones, which hopefully will wash off in rain. Perhaps this was done to balance the vicious racist grafitti on the back of the wonderful tree that keeps the stones company. What a pity that such a calm space should have to be scarred with such vileness. One of the stones is smaller and quite embedded on the ground, so I counted eight stones at first. Doh!

If you have visited the 9 stones site, and survived the traffic, take a walk in the direction of Devon (W) for about 1/2 mile There is a pull-in. Look over the hedge to see Broadstone site (A picture of which was submitted to the editors Oct 2003).

Whenever I have visited here, I wear my yellow fluorescent bib I use for being visible when cycling / walking in no, or poor light. 1) It has the property of making you more visible, and 2) It has a remarkable effect in making much of the traffic slow down (esp if your other clothes are dark) as they think it's the police!

visit to nine stones stunning , especially at this time of year(may) as the wooded area to the left was carpeted with wild garlic..illuminescent in the dusk.
access bit hairy.. almost got knocked over by six hells angels followed by a pagan on a bicycle!!

Second the above comment - this is a very dangerous site to visit as the A35 is extremely busy and a very fast road. The site is worth it though, especially in summer, for although it is easy to miss (as you come out of Winterbourne Abbas you should look for the layby on the right-hand side, and not the circle itself), the green canopy over your head lends this site a slightly other-worldy atmosphere.
