Sittaford Stone Circle

Sittaford Stone Circle submitted by theCaptain on 12th Jun 2014. With the weather turned nice, I took a day off work to walk out to the newly found Sittaford Tor stone circle. This is a plot from my GPS showing not only the track of my walking around of the circle, but I also created a waypoint for each stone, which are plotted as the little flags.

Log Text: With the weather turned nice, I took a day off work to walk out to the newly found Sittaford Tor stone circle, starting out from Fernworthy Reservoir. Having planned the trip in advance, so knowing where to look, the circle was very easy to find, although very wet and boggy. All of the stones have been dug around so they are no longer buried in the mire. Excellent.

Log Text: Good views of Silbury today, so I decide to walk to it along the path in the fields north of the busy A4 road. It looks lovely in this light, sometimes in the sunshine and sometimes in the shade. With the bright green grass of the fields blowing around in the wind, it looks to be floating in a sea of green. Beautiful, and strangely compelling. From here I walk towards Avebury along the stream, but see people walking over Waden Hill, so decide to go over that and down to the Avenue, so as to approach Avebury along the West Kennet Avenue. There are fabulous views of Silbury Hill in its plain from up here, probably the best views of it there are to be had.

Log Text: Walking along the fields beside the stream, get clear views of Silbaby mound, recently declared to be not prehistoric but medieval, and officially named The Waden Mound. There is a dead tree in front of it with a large hollow near the top which makes it look like an owl from a distance.

Showery Tor Ring Cairn submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jan 2015. The beautiful pile of weathered and balanced granite slabs at the top of Showery Tor has a very large and well defined ring of stones around it. No doubt this place was of great significance to the ancient people who lived around here.

Showery Tor Northwest Cairn 1 submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jan 2015. On the slopes of Showery Tor, above the top end of the long cairn structure, are remains of a few hut and round cairn structures. I thought this to be the remains of a round cairn with cist.

Showery Tor North Standing Stone

Showery Tor North Standing Stone submitted by TheCaptain on 11th Jul 2015. Looking around from one of the cairns, I again notice something over towards Davidstow, about halfway to the forest, and wonder what it is, so I decide to walk over and have a look. This is definitely a standing stone, still stood upright and held in place by a good amount of packing stones.

Shovel Down row 7 submitted by thecaptain on 14th Oct 2004. Shovel Down row 7. About 100 metres below the Three Boys Stone can be found a large flat stone, with what looks like a slab mounted on edge nearby. Could these be the remains of some form of cairn or cist associated with this now destroyed row? Kes Tor on the horizon in this view looking northeast.
