Menhir des Verdons
Date Added: 29th Oct 2019
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Rhone:Savoie (73))
Visited: Yes on 17th Feb 2011
Menhir des Verdons submitted by TheCaptain on 17th Feb 2011. Is this an ancient menhir which has been re-erected, or a more modern stone ? I don't know. I can find nothing out about it. But here it stands, proudly at the Verdons lift complex, in the middle of the Courchevel ski area.
The stone itself stands about 2.5 metres tall, and certainly looks the part. I'm guessing a re-erection.

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Pays de la Loire:Maine-et-Loire 49)
Visited: Couldn't find on 16th Jul 2005
Log Text: There are three menhirs marked on my 1:100,000 map here in the region of the ring road to the south of the town of Montreuil-Bellay. I struggled to find any of them, so went to the local Super U to check out the 1:25,000 map. Turns out there are 4 menhirs to be found, and three castles, one of which blocks off most of the town to a camping car. This menhir is somewhere in a swamp by the river Thouet, between a major road junction and the river Thouet, with no chance of being able to find it.

Log Text: In a little forest clearing amongst the sand dunes to the north of Olonnes-sur-Mer, this 2 metre tall granite menhir is easily found due to the signposted footpaths. It leans slightly and has a pointed top. I suspect that there are others around here buried under the sand dunes.

There is another lump of stone at its base, which I think may have broken off the top at some time. It is about 2 metres wide and 1 metre thick, and positively gleams in the late afternoon sunshine.

Log Text: I found a signpost pointing down a track to this menhir, but could only park the campervan by blocking the lane. Following the track, it divided into three, and there was no indication which way to go to the menhir. I had a quick look along two of the possible directions, but I found no stone before I decided I had better move on. I have since found that the stone may be quite some distance walk along one of the tracks, but which one I still do not know.

Log Text: Seen at a distance of about 200 metres across fields from the little bridge across the Risle river. There wasn’t really anywhere to park and there looked no way to get to the menhir so I contented myself with a long distance shot. It must be nearly 4 metres tall in a large flat pasture beside the river.
