Log Text: The remains of no less than three granite stèles are to be found lined up in the churchyard at Goulien. One is very small, one about 1.5 metres high and probably once used as a cross base. The third is 2.5 metres tall and has lovely grooves carved into it.

Kerivoret menhir submitted by theCaptain on 20th Jun 2014. About 50 metres away from the Kerivoret dolmen is a nice menhir, which looks to have been shaped with a slanted top. It's about 3.5 metres tall.

Log Text: This is a nice looking dolmen sitting in a pleasant field behind the houses. It is signposted from the roan, and has a path to it from behind the houses, where there is room to park. The chamber is about 3 metres long, less than 2 metres wide, and created with a good back stone and two large side slabs each side. There are other stones at the open end, perhaps an entry corridor or a broken front slab. The capstone is a nice piece of granite, and overhangs the sides considerably in places, being about 4 metres across in each direction.

Log Text: Now completely surrounded by cultivated fields, the remains of this allée couvert are easily found to the west of the hamlet of Diévet. What remains are two parallel rows of orthostats (12 in total), between 10 and 11 metres in length by 1.5 metres wide, and with a single large coverstone remaining in the middle.

Kerprigent alignement de menhirs submitted by theCaptain on 11th Jul 2014. In the woodlands to the northeast of Kerprigent Manoir, can be seen a quartz standing stone, just short of three metres tall. Wander into this delightful ancient woodland, and it is soon seen that the quartz menhir is not alone, being surrounded by a large number of other quartz stones.

Log Text: After the disappointment of Barnenez being closed we still have quite a drive to the hotel in Ploumenach, so although no time for any out of the way stone visits, but should be able to fit a couple of quick visits in if not too far out of the way. A good look at the maps suggests a couple of places, the first of which seemed to be an old chapel despite its dolmen sign on the map, and this the second which looked easy enough to find, and indeed was.
In the grounds of Kerprigent Manoir, not far from the side of a small road through the woodlands to the northeast of the Manoir can be seen a quartz standing stone, just short of three metres tall. Find somewhere to park and wander into this delightful ancient woodland, and it is soon seen that the quartz menhir is not alone, being surrounded by a large number of other quartz stones. It initially looked as if these stones were in several lines, but to be honest they could be randomly positioned, and lines are always going to appear. The main menhir was probably once much larger, as it looked as if the many surrounding stones were probably broken from its top.
On this hot April afternoon, it was lovely to be in the calm and shade amongst these ancient trees, just about to spring into life, and with masses of birdsong all around. As is the normal case, these quartz stones seem to keep very cool. A lovely place to spend some time.

Menhir de Coat Mocoun (sud) submitted by TheCaptain on 26th Jul 2016. Spent some time looking for various menhirs here while travelling through the area. To the south of the road junction I followed a pathway through some newly cut scrubland which was until revently forest, heading towards the noise of the quarry. The path eventually entered into some wooded land, with many boulders laying around, the remnants of quarrying.
Then I saw something. Not an 8m tall menhir, but a 4 metre tall stone standing amongst noulders. I am pretty convinved that this stone...

Butte de Goassec'h

Butte de Goassec'h submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Aug 2019. The Butte de Goassec'h is a newly discovered large chambered cairn to the south of Carhaix-Plouguer. Currently (2019) being excavated, it has been rich in discoveries with the update in the butte of a large megalithic architecture containing 3 Dolmens that have not been open for 4000 years!
The archeologist in charge of the excavations is Florian Cousseau. "The results are beyond what we could expect, can't wait for the next few years!"

Log Text: This menhir has lost its top, but is still about 3 metres high, 2 metres wide and has been nicely shaped, and is associated with the lovely allée couverte with which it stands just outside the entrance. It can be found in a field to the left of the D116 road to the south of Moelan-sur-Mer on the way to Brigneau.

Log Text: This is a nice allée couverte which can be found in a field just to the right of the D.24 road as you head southwest out of Moelan-sur-Mer just at the limits of the village. The chamber is more than 15 metres in length, and has all seven capstones still in place, although a couple of them are broken. It is aligned on about 055°, but it is difficult to be precise because of the trees growing within it preventing me getting a good sightline for my compass. The stones consist of a nice pink granite, and is of the leaning side stone type construction. At the back end, the last section is blocked off with a crosswise slab.

Log Text: In a field to the left of the D116 road to the south of Moelan-sur-Mer on the way to Brigneau can be found this lovely allée couverte with an associated menhir just outside its entrance. The menhir is about 3 metres high, 2 metres wide and has been nicely shaped.
The allée couverte is about 9 metres in length and faces to the east on an alignment of 100°. There are three complete and one broken (at the back) capstones sitting on top of the inwards leaning side stones, which are much wider at the base than the capstone width. Unfortunately the back end is all broken and has a tree growing in it. The front end has a narrowed down entrance.
There is a "hooting Hubert" bouy somewhere out to sea, continually hooting away !

Log Text: Kernédiec allée couverte is of the arc boutée type construction, and it is one of only eight of this type known. This is where one row of side stones leans up against the other and there are no capstones, rather than the more normal two rows of uprights and horizontal capstones. The chamber is about eight metres in length, and faces eastwards at 085°. The six stones on the northern side are set fairly vertically, while the seven on the southern side lean on to them.
This type of construction saves on stones, but makes a much smaller space inside the chamber. This monument is to be found in a little picnic area besides the road a few kilometres to the south of the village of Riec-sur-Belon, but its a fairly tortuous drive to get to it !

Log Text: Coat Luzuen allée couverte is situated in a field just to the west of the little road running north from the hamlet of Luzuen, and although signposted, it is quite difficult to find, with the last signpost being small and almost hidden, overgrown in a hedge opposite to a farm building.
When I visited this I was not totally sure what it was I was visiting, I could not be sure whether it is the remains of a strangely shaped allée couverte, or perhaps two dolmens, both quite large and opening to the west. Although I know of this as an allée couverte, it is marked on some maps as two dolmens, and as far as I can ascertain from more research, it was a single large allée couverte which has had a section removed from its centre.
The western part of the two sections has a large chamber covered by a massive single capstone 7 metres long by 3 metres wide, and it is easy to stand up inside. The eastern part, which was possibly once joined as the two side walls line up, is not so large, and is only open to the west, in the direction of its neighbour, and has only two sidestones and an endstone, the other side having collapsed.

The Allée Couverte de Coat Luzuen photo has been incorrectly used for this monument in Megalithes de Bretagne.

Log Text: From the Coat Luzuen allée couverte, continue on about 800 metres further down the road which peters out into a trackway and descends to the bottom of the valley. Turn left at the bottom, cross the stream, go along the wet track and the Coat-Menez-Guen allée couverte is to be found at the end of the field. Unfortunately when I visited, it was completely inaccessible through a large crop of rape seed.
It is supposedly a superb monument, being a 14 metre long allée couverte of the arc boutée type with some capstones added for good measure. However, all I saw was the capstones ! It took me a lot of effort and time to get here, and unfortunately it was not worth the effort in this state. Its probably a good one to visit in February or something !

Log Text: This little dolmen, with a capstone sitting on three side slabs is to be found round the back of the local sports centre. The capstone is nicely rain worn on the top, and sits at a jaunty angle. It perhaps once had an entry corridor as the side stones are smaller at one end, and I believe that this is in fact the remains of what was once a compartmented dolmen, with much of the rest of it destroyed.

On mappy.com enter place Kerugou, postcode 29120. View aerial photo at street level and about 200 metres north west of post code address (on aerial photo it is at south east corner of mini triangular village green) you'll see dolmen by different colour in field to north west of mini triangular village green.

Log Text: Kerugou dolmen is an interesting one, which can be found just inside a field beside a small road and signposted. It has a large compartmented chamber at the back, western end, with a long central passageway opening up to the east, at orientation 097°. The central passage is about 9 metres long and up to 2m in width away from the entrance. The two side chambers align along the back wall, and are each 3m by 2.5m, with some massive side slabs. Unfortunately, there is only one capstone still in place, and that is on the entrance passageway, but it's a nice monument to discover. Much of its mound is still in place.

Nor the ancient city of Y, which is now under the sea because the King's daughter sold herself to the devil. This bay is also where the dead set sail from on their final voyage to the Ile de Sein.
There are lots of legends and stories surrounding this beautiful bay, but no menhir anymore.
