Marden Henge

Marden Henge is the biggest henge in England but because it did not have a stone circle associated with it, has tended to be overlooked. A huge mound, like a smaller version of Silbury Hill, named Hatfield Barrow, once existed within the henge, but it was levelled in the 19th C.
Foundations have been excavated within the henge that could have been a Neolithic sauna, containing a sunken hearth that would have given out intense heat.

About 6 kilometres along this road on the left (south side) is a small road leading to Tullichuil farm. Park carefully at this entrance, and there is a gate leading in to the field on the west side of the road. The circle is plainly visible from here. Cors y Gedol submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Sep 2005. This was our last stop of the day, so lighting conditions were deteriorating rapidly. The best way I could get something out of this composite shot was to use a sepia filter. The collapsed chamber here (as so many in the area) is obvious. Fine views out to sea, and up into the mountains.
