We were here over an hour and had it to ourselves. A very exposed location in hard rain and very lovely in warm sunshine, both of which we had in the time here.

Log Text: You can park free in the old school yard next to the bridge over the Tees, and follow the Pennine Way until you choose to divert towards the site. I know this because a helpful woman in the community bookshop told me (but she did say it's a Saxon burial site). The tourist info office is open only a few hours a week. Both places are staffed by volunteers.

Penywyrlod submitted by dodomad on 21st Apr 2016. In 2005 Caroline Wilkinson from Dundee University was commissioned to produce a forensic reconstruction of the skull discovered in 1972. Caroline's work involves taking a plaster cast of the skull and positioning pins on it to indicate the likely depth of flesh at a number of key locations. These depths are based on measurements from the faces of modern people of similar racial type. Clay is then used to build up the layers of muscle, before skin and hair are added. The stone, with the location of Esgair Perfedd to the rear - a Roman Marching Camp said to take up to 4,000 soldiers, and believed to be constructed during the last Campaign against the (for us) Welsh. Did the Romans use these ridge top markers to help follow the route into the mountains? I reckon they did. Then I picture 4,000 tired, but battle ready Roman soldiers passing this stone some 1900 years ago. If the stones could speak...
