Gray Hill stone row

Gray Hill stone row submitted by TheCaptain on 2nd Apr 2004. Grey Hill or Gray Hill Stone Row, Monmouthshire, ST437936 - ST438935 Looking to the south down the hill, is a fairly reasonable alignment of 5 stones in a row, which sort of joins between the jumbled stone remains on the top of the hill and the stone circle.

Great Burney cairn Grid ref SD26401 85541 turned out to be several cairns in what looked like a settlement. Some were exposed but others were under grass but the outlines could be seen. the cairns were tucked in under the fell side and commanded a view across to Lowick High Common (now the site of a wind farm) and the Duddon Estuary.

Grey Stone (Harewood)

Grey Stone (Harewood) submitted by DavidRaven on 13th Aug 2003. A large boulder in the grounds of the Harewood House estate near Harrogate. A very worn carving of seven concentric rings lies on it's north-western flank. The carving faces out over the valley to the conspicuous outcrop called Almscliff Crag. Apparently, the midwinter full moon would have set behind the crags at the lunar standstill in 1800 B.C.! If you visit, watch out for the Red Kites and over zealous estate workers intent on preventing gentle tresspass!

Site Type: Rock Art Country: England
Visited: Would like to visit

Adel Cupstone

Adel Cupstone submitted by DavidRaven on 21st Oct 2003. Thought to be the base of a lost stone cross, it now sits amongst old stone coffins in Adel churchyard (SE 2739 4020). The rock has been shaped into a vague cylinder with a basin and undercut below. There are said to be six cups and a 'horseshoe' groove on the upper surface (two of the cups are partly cut away by the edge of the stone). It is believed to have originated from the nearby village of Eccup (Simpson, 1879) and could be the remains of a 'plague stone' (Cowling, 1963).
