Ffon-y-Cawr

Ffon-y-Cawr submitted by Johnny on 27th Nov 2001. Ffon-y-Cawr (The Giant's Staff) standing stone, Conwy, (GR: SH738 717). This slender solitary standing stone stands a short distance from the Maen-y-Bardd burial chamber with which it is linked in legend: the stone is reputed to have been thrown by a giant at his dog which was lazing in the chamber!

Cerrig Pryfaid submitted by stonedowser on 23rd Feb 2002. This is a good circle, though not easily seen until you are actually standing by it. There are a couple of outliers associated with the circle and what dowses as a cairn also. More pictures and dowsing diagram on web pages. Ian.

Log Text: I had, for some reason, been reluctant to even visit the site as I’d heard the stone was no longer in situ and, even though I was brought up in the village next door, I had never gone to check it out.
While in the village promoting my upcoming free Welsh lessons I thought I’d pop and take a look and was pleasantly surprised to see the stone in a small field at the top of the village.
Impressive standing stone - almost as wide as it is tall - imposing itself on its surroundings. The style gave easy access from the road but it was easily seen from my car.
The name translates as ‘the stone [of the] slab’ but ‘llech’ can also suggest ‘slate’ - probably from Greek origins > ‘-lith’ etc.

Log Text: Lane was a bit of pain on the way but a small area for parking was obvious.
When we arrived we were welcomed by some cows when we attempted to cross the field via the public footpath so we found a small road leading to a house and followed that - I’m not sure whether we should have but oh well! Dare I say it, our track was far less muddy than the public footpath.
Beautiful setting aside, the site was nice to visit. Is there any chance that the two [remaining?] uprights were pillars originally? I’d guess at no due to size of the capstone but I did question it.
Also, is there any information of who ‘Moloch’ was and why this was considered his altar?
Diolch yn fawr a mwynhewch.
