SteCymru14 visited on 16th Feb 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Lane was a bit of pain on the way but a small area for parking was obvious. When we arrived we were welcomed by some cows when we attempted to cross the field via the public footpath so we found a small road leading to a house and followed that - I’m not sure whether we should have but oh well! Dare I say it, our track was far less muddy than the public footpath. Beautiful setting aside, the site was nice to visit. Is there any chance that the two [remaining?] uprights were pillars originally? I’d guess at no due to size of the capstone but I did question it. Also, is there any information of who ‘Moloch’ was and why this was considered his altar? Diolch yn fawr a mwynhewch.

Hendre Waelod Portal Dolmen lies on a hill slope on the eastern side of the Conwy Valley. It consists of a large chamber roofed by an enormous capstone, with two portal stones to the south-east. The chamber which faces uphill is covered by the remains of a long cairn and can be accessed from the back.

To add to this - the footpath takes you straight to the site which is fenced off. The dolmen, when complete, would have (presumably) had its main long axis running down the spur from the hill named Bryniau leading to the Afon Conwy. The monument would have been seen as part of the spur itself. Despite its ruined state it is well worth the short walk.

Hendre Waelod submitted by TimPrevett : On the approach to Hendre Waelod uphill and east, next to the footpath, there are these large stones. Given that the cairn for the dolmen was quite considerable, you can't help but wonder if these were once part of the original cairn covering. Also a video of Hendre Waelod on my YouTube Channel. Visited 9th July 2022.

There is a kissing gate about 100 feet uphill from the tomb, which gives better access into the 'other side' of the tomb.

Re: Hendre Waelod Parking & access by TimPrevett on Thursday, 30 September 2010

Parking for here is best by taking a right turn just before a bend heading south from Conwy, east of the river; come to a green triangle and park within that triangle; follow the track the branches off from there to the right, then after a few minutes heading downhill, a stile into a field on the right gives access.

The picture of the site with bluebells was very nice. Visited here a few years ago too; accessing both sides was problematical, and a herd of frisky young bullocks pursued us back with increasing speed and interest.

The tomb can be seen quite clearly from the Llandudno - Blaenau Ffestiniog train line too; I said hello to it on the way to the Gwynedd meet last September, Victor. Good to see your pictures.

I visited this site in February 2004 - sadly a dead sheep was located in the chamber.

I don't think the landowner likes visitors too much as the dolmen is fenced off and there is much barbed wire.

Visit in the winter if you can as Hendre Waelod is under trees.
