Skara Brae
Date Added: 8th Oct 2015
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: Scotland (Orkney)
Visited: Yes on 8th Oct 2015

Skara Brae submitted by SandyG on 8th Oct 2015. The walk from the visitor centre to the site is marked with stones representing special events in history. The first one denotes landing on the moon in 1969. The last time I was at Skara Brae was the day after the landing. So the distance between the wall and the first stone is also the time between my visits. (7th June 2015).

Log Text: Car parking is available at NT 08327 03648. From here walk towards Moffat on the roadside path until you reach the row. Carefully cross the busy road. Best visited in the winter or early spring before the vegetation obscures the stones. One of the few stone rows with dreadful ambience.

Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: Scotland (Caithness)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 2

Watenan West submitted by SandyG on 1st Jan 2018. Edge set slab exposed in the side of a peat exposure. The accumulation of peat around the stone confirms its considerable antiquity. View from south east (Scale 1m).

Log Text: Car parking is available at ND 31885 40851. Follow the signposting to the Cairn O’Get. At ND 31523 40988 follow the track north to ND 31713 42049 where Watenan, East can be visited before proceeding to Watenan, West. Watenan, West is only about 400m away to the north west but the ground is uneven and care should be taken to avoid the frequent boggy areas.

Log Text: Car parking is available at SN 81996 27149. From here take the track leading south to SN 82216 26547. Cross the wall via a stile and head across open moorland to the row. It is worth having a look at the stone circles a short distance to the south east of the row. A stream needs to be forded and wellingtons may be the best footwear for this one.

Godre'r Garn Las Cairn submitted by sem on 14th Nov 2017. Taken from Coflein - "Despite its ruinous condition, the cairn's proximity to two stone circles suggests a Bronze Age date for the mound."

Nant Tarw ESE submitted by enkidu41 on 9th Jun 2004. SN 819 258
This 8' long stone outlier lies WNW of the Nant Tarw ESE circle. The small upright slab standing next to it suggests it may be the remains of a row connected with this circle in the same way the Nant Tarw Stone Row is connected with the Nant Tarw WNW circle.

Gors Fawr Stone Circle submitted by Horatio on 22nd Jun 2019. Summer Solstice sunrise at Gors Fawr 2019. Taken on my phone.
As I stood behind everyone I thought 'just how many people over the thousands of years have stood in my place and watched this and how many more to come in the following years to replace me'
It was a truly moving, 'spiritual' experience.
It was a long day yesterday (not just because the hours of sunlight) as sunrise here, then work (in east Carmarthenshire) and then back to N Pembs for the sunset at Pentre Ifan burial ch...

NGR: around SM99893591 (Landranger map 157/Outdoor Leisure North Pembrokeshire map (No 35))
Four stones remain of this row - two of which make up gateposts - the other two are upright in the hedge that borders the road. The Outdoor Leisure North Pembrokeshire map marks only three but two further stones are located ~300m to the south east. Other stones can be seen or make up the roadside bank.
The gateposts look quite square unlike the other two s...
