Chinnor Hill Barrows

Chinnor Hill Barrows submitted by Richard13 on 20th Aug 2023. A view across the Chinnor Barrows. They are covered in vegetation but can be made out once found, and the picture also shows the fine views available from this site.

Log Text: The Chinnor Hill barrows are recognisable but are covered in vegetation so could be missed at first. However there is a sign to show their location, and once found the nature and layout of the site becomes clear. Situated on top of the Chiltern escarpment in the heart of nature reserve this site has a beautiful and spectacular location, with fine views available of the surrounding landscape and the local flora and fauna. It is a short walk on a good path from the nature reserve car park.

Log Text: Visited this impressive site on a fine spring evening. The lengthening shadows helped to show the height of the banks and how the henge fits into the surrounding landscape. Although located very close to the city of Belfast, the urban landscape feels a world away here.

Log Text: Although nothing remains of this site, which has long been destroyed, I thought that it would be interesting to visit the location and try walking the location of the Henge where possible. Based on the information already posted on the Megalithic Portal and an article from Oxonensia by Lambrick from 2013 (https://www.oxoniensia.org/volumes/2013/Lambrick.pdf) I was able to trace the location of the henge around Keble, Parks and Blackhall Road.

It is fascinating to think that this part of Oxford could once have been part of a wider ceremonial landscape of major significance, especially in the light of discoveries in adjacent areas such as the University Parks and the Radcliffe Infirmary site. I certainly feel that it would merit an information board or plaque at the location to explain the history.

Caer-Dyni submitted by Tivy01 on 21st May 2013. Parking for Caer-Dyniis is in a lay-by east of Cricceth.Less than a 5 minute walk from the lay-by.Caer-Dyni has a great view of Cricceth castle.

Log Text: Situated within easy reach of Criccieth this site deserves to be better known even if it has sustained some damage. Rather than accessing it from the car park off the main road I think it is best appreciated by walking along the path by Dylan's restaurant between the railway and the golf course. The path turns sharp left to cross the railway and at this point the capstone is quite prominent on the hillside and is visible as you approach,. The views across the beach and town to the castle are spectacular.

Log Text: It is surprising that such an impressive and easy to access site is so little known - it is almost 'hidden in plain sight' an easy 5 minute walk from the hamlet of Rhoslan. The size of the capstone really needs to be seen to be appreciated!

Log Text: A fascinating and delightful site with a complex and interesting history! The chambers have been subject to repairs using bricks and mortar to create additional pillars, but this does not prevent an appreciation of the site. Although it is situated adjacent to a school and houses, and is close to the main road, this did not detract from the ambience as much as you might expect. The main sound we heard was birdsong.

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...

Log Text: Situated in the heart of Carn Euny village, this was my first visit to a Fougou and it did not disappoint! It was interesting to see how it interacts with the buildings in the village and find the signs of how its layout has evolved.

Visited during a July heatwave, so the intererior of the Fougou was dry!

Carn Euny Village submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. This view over the Carn Euny Settlement was taken in two shots, which are cobbled together to give an idea of how it looked in March 2004. Bec-Zog's pic is similar to this.

Log Text: Visiting this site required negociating some narrow country lanes, but it is signed and is well worth the effort of reaching it. There is a small parking area and Carn Euny is a short walk away from here.

The remains of the houses are clearly visible and the walls can clearly be made out. There are also other features visible such as paving and internal dividing walls in the houses. It does not take too much imagination to visualise how the village would have looked (with the help of some useful information boards) and it was interesting to consider how its inhabitants would have gone about their daily lives. There is also a Fougou here which makes it doubly worth visiting!

Log Text: A circle which is not only interesting, but also evocative and atmospheric. There is a short walk from the A30 layby through Willowherb and Bracken to reach it, and a small rise in the path affords a tantalising preview glimpse of the circle just before arriving at it. Boscawen Un sits within its own enclosure, but even without this it would still have a tangible sense of place and space.

The leaning central stone is a focal point, but the whole site has a special fascination and beauty.

Log Text: An unexpected bonus when walking from the Merry Maidens to The Pipers! It is eroded but still very much recognisable although as it sits by the roadside some care is needed when viewing it.

Log Text: This site is easily accessible by road, as the road was actually built across part of it. Still well worth a visit and recognisable as a Barrow, although sadly most people driving past (through?) it will have no idea it is there!

Log Text: Lanyon Quoit stands next to the road and can be seen from it as you approach. It looks impressive and stands out against the landscape, making for a fine sight. Although it has been reconstructed and has lost some height and impact as a result, it is still a fine and interesting sight and well worth a visit. The area is worth a closer inspection to make out the outline of the associated barrow.

Log Text: These two stones are situated just off the main A39 road near to the top of Porlock Hill. They can be accessed by a short walk from the nearby parking layby and the white stones stand out clearly against the heather moorland. The site is spectacularly situated with fine view across Exmoor and out to sea. They are not signed and I get the impression they are not well known and are often overlooked. But the Whitstones are well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Log Text: This site sits directly adjacent to the road but is still extremely easy to miss amongst the trees unless you know the exact location. The huge megaliths still manage to impress and in my opinion this site much more atmospheric and imposing than the more famous Whsipering Knights at Rollright. Well worth the slight detour from Enstone on the A44.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Access and information has improved since my last visit. A new road (Marina Lane) branches off Roecliffe Road on the way into Boroughbridge and this now features a small parking area with an information board about the stones which seems to be aimed at visitors to the Devils Arrows.

One of the Arrows sits adjacent to the main road in a small clearing while the two others stand in the field opposite it. All of them can be seen from the new parking spaces and can be walked to. Although the main road into Boroughbridge passes by one stone and the two others are close to the A168 road this does not detract as much as you think it would as the stones are big enough to have an imposing presence of their own. Access to one Arrow is extremely easy as it is next to the road, while access to the others would probably depend more on the state of the crops in the field.

This is an excellent site to visit as a break if you are on a car journey up or down the A1(M) and the new layby and information board is a positive development. In spite of this I am sure that many people drive straight past and don't realise that the stones are there

Log Text: An impressive circle-henge, this site is almost a total restoration. A few stones survived the plough until the early 20th century, when they were buried to make room for an airfield. This is turn became a quarry and a landfill site so that the site exists at all is something for which we should be very grateful! It was restored in the early 21st century by re-erecting the remaining stones and replacing others, and restoring the bank and ditch. When I first visited in 2009 the site still seemed quite raw and exposed to the surrounding industry, but now overlooking a lake. Since then the surrounding trees have grown and matured and the old landfill areas have been better landscaped, making for a much improved ambience although there is still some activity around the landfill. However it is a fine place to visit now (May 2020) and as the landscape continues to mature it will only continue to improve.

Log Text: Wayland's Smithy is well preserved Severn-Cotswold long barrow which enjoys a delightful setting amidst a small plantation of trees. The approach along the ridgeway makes for a fine prelude and a visit can also be combined with a visit to Uffington Castle and White Horse. The large stones at the front of the barrow make for an impressive sight, and the chambers in the barrow are also accessible. Wayland's Smithy is well known site so can become busy, so it is worth visiting 'off-season'. However a visit is always rewarding whevener you go.
