Minions Mound
Date Added: 21st Feb 2021
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jul 2018. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 5

Minions Mound submitted by windowman on 21st Jan 2012. Minions Mound, a bronze age cairn that is situated by the car park for the Hurlers stone circle site. Easy to miss, many if not all the visitors to the car park are probably unaware just what this small mound is. The mound was damaged when the walls for the adjacent cottages were built, and half the mound was cut away, forming a 'D' shape. The cairn gave it's name to the village of Minions, which was previously called Cheewring Railway, a major junction point for the original Liskeard and Carad...

The Hurlers Pipers submitted by JimChampion on 24th Aug 2007. View through the 'goalposts' of the Pipers, neatly framing Stowe's Hill in the distance (home of the Cheesewring natural rock feature and the neolithic enclosure of Stowe's Pound). These two stones stand to the west of the Hurlers stone circles. The dung in the foreground is from the ponies that graze the moor.

Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 19th Jul 2022. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

Lanyon Quoit submitted by KernowBysVykken on 25th Jul 2015. Lanyon Quoit at dawn on the 21st June 2015. The more recent landmark, Ding Dong mine can be seen on the horizon.

Log Text: Lanyon Quoit stands next to the road and can be seen from it as you approach. It looks impressive and stands out against the landscape, making for a fine sight. Although it has been reconstructed and has lost some height and impact as a result, it is still a fine and interesting sight and well worth a visit. The area is worth a closer inspection to make out the outline of the associated barrow.
Merry Maidens (Circle)

Merry Maidens (Circle) submitted by Bladup on 19th Aug 2013. A Rainbow and the light from the setting sun shining onto Merry Maidens stone circle.

Log Text: A neat and tidy circle which is also easy to access. As it is adjacent to the road and has its own layby it can get busy but it is worth lingering to find a quieter moment to appreciate it.

Located by the side of the road close to the Merry Maidens stone circle.

Log Text: This site is easily accessible by road, as the road was actually built across part of it. Still well worth a visit and recognisable as a Barrow, although sadly most people driving past (through?) it will have no idea it is there!

Log Text: An unexpected bonus when walking from the Merry Maidens to The Pipers! It is eroded but still very much recognisable although as it sits by the roadside some care is needed when viewing it.

Log Text: Near the Merry Maidens but not visible from the circle itself. Not as easy to spot from the road as expected due to high hedges, but impressive enough once located!
Boscawen Un
Date Added: 23rd Jul 2022
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)

Boscawen Un submitted by BazCross on 30th Mar 2012. Boscawen Un photographed March 2012.

Log Text: A circle which is not only interesting, but also evocative and atmospheric. There is a short walk from the A30 layby through Willowherb and Bracken to reach it, and a small rise in the path affords a tantalising preview glimpse of the circle just before arriving at it. Boscawen Un sits within its own enclosure, but even without this it would still have a tangible sense of place and space.
The leaning central stone is a focal point, but the whole site has a special fascination and beauty.
Carn Euny Village
Date Added: 24th Jul 2022
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 21st Jul 2022. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

Carn Euny Village submitted by AngieLake on 31st Oct 2004. This view over the Carn Euny Settlement was taken in two shots, which are cobbled together to give an idea of how it looked in March 2004. Bec-Zog's pic is similar to this.

Log Text: Visiting this site required negociating some narrow country lanes, but it is signed and is well worth the effort of reaching it. There is a small parking area and Carn Euny is a short walk away from here.
The remains of the houses are clearly visible and the walls can clearly be made out. There are also other features visible such as paving and internal dividing walls in the houses. It does not take too much imagination to visualise how the village would have looked (with the help of some useful information boards) and it was interesting to consider how its inhabitants would have gone about their daily lives. There is also a Fougou here which makes it doubly worth visiting!

Carn Euny Fogou submitted by AngieLake on 2nd Jan 2005. This shot shows the huge but low (4.5ft - 1.4m) SE-facing doorway of the Carn Euny 'Beehive Hut' underground chamber, with its own short passage leading into the fogou passage which runs SW/NE, (but snaking here with a flatter, more W/E run), just outside the doorway. It is thought that the Beehive Hut (chamber) was the first structure on this site, so that originally the eastern wall of the fogou passage would not have obstructed the view. It is possible that the sun was meant to shine down t...

Log Text: Situated in the heart of Carn Euny village, this was my first visit to a Fougou and it did not disappoint! It was interesting to see how it interacts with the buildings in the village and find the signs of how its layout has evolved.
Visited during a July heatwave, so the intererior of the Fougou was dry!
