Allan Tofts 5c

Allan Tofts 5c submitted by kelpie on 1st Sep 2004. One of the most decorated stones on the moor, cup marks and interlinking lines are clearly seen.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: To find, this requires an accurate GPS and exact grid reference (5 figures easting and northing) as there are numerous other rocks in the area and navigation is confusing. It is somewhat on its own in boggy vegetation close to several Bronze age cairns. The rock art is not very obvious because the rock has been partially covered by vegetation encroaching around the edges and onto the top surface. Encrusting lichens cover over half of the top surface. Nonetheless, the visible features include several cups, though the interconnecting lines are less visible.

Allan Tofts 7

Allan Tofts 7 submitted by SolarMegalith on 12th Jul 2014. Cup-and-ring mark with a single ring on Allan Tofts 7 panel (photo taken on June 2014).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This rock is in a fairly featureless boggy area with many other surrounding stones, and unless you have an accurate GPS and exact grid reference you may struggle to find it. A few large cup marks were discernible but much of the top of the rock is flush with the vegetation and it has encroached over the sides and onto the top. there is also much encrusting lichen. The linear markings were not visible and animal droppings had filled one of the cups.

Allan Tofts 9

Allan Tofts 9 submitted by SolarMegalith on 12th Jul 2014. Cups with penannulars on Allan Tofts 9 panel (photo taken on June 2014).
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is one of the easier stones with rock art to locate at Allan Tofts as it is right next to a track, but a good GPS and accurate grid reference will still help as there are many other nearby stones and the rock art is not very visible. Mossy growth almost completely obscured the cups and ring.

Ana Cross Round Barrow and Wayside Cross

Ana Cross Round Barrow and Wayside Cross

Ana Cross Round Barrow and Wayside Cross submitted by johndhunter on 15th Oct 2017. Ana Cross, a view looking north west taken in September 2011
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ana Cross and barrow are slap in the middle of Spaunton Moor and a fair walk is required to get to it, though a mountain bike would give access along the moorland track from Chimney Bank at Rosedale Abbey. I walked across from Lastingham to the south. The view on approach with the heather in bloom was superb. Apart from a broad moorland scene, there is not much else to be seen. I am not sure that I like crosses on barrows, as the one de-faces the other somewhat, but if taken as a combination it is a suitable elevation from which to display a cross so that it can be seen from a distance.

Ann's Cross

Date Added: 9th Nov 2024
Site Type: Ancient Cross Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 25th Aug 2022. My rating: Ambience 4 Access 3

Ann's Cross

Ann's Cross submitted by johndhunter on 14th Sep 2018. Ann’s Cross at NZ 87774 00168 – Viewed looking north easterly towards Newton House Plantation, August 2015
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ann's Cross is yet another cross on a barrow....the whole area is replete with them. The barrow is quite low compared to others locally, and the views not as good as from others.

Broughton Bank WAI 1a

Broughton Bank WAI 1a

Broughton Bank WAI 1a submitted by johndhunter on 20th Feb 2024. Site 1a at - NZ 55626 03590 - Overall view looking across the top towards the Garfit Gap and Cold Moor beyond, August 2013.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This rock possibly represents the most sacred of the Wainstones art rocks as it lies on the very edge of the Cleveland Escarpment and overlooks Roseberry Topping. It is, bizarrely, part of a field boundary and a fence crosses right over the top of the rock. The rock has many modified basins with cups, channels, notches and some cup-and-ring marks. There is much modern graffiti. This rock deserves to be better presented to the world.

Brow Moor - Rock 104

Brow Moor - Rock 104

Brow Moor - Rock 104 submitted by johndhunter on 20th Jun 2023. Rock 104, site 07b, map area E at NZ 96705 01011 – Top view of the panel taken in May 2023. The stone is slowly being overgrown and some cup marks are disappearing from view. However I am now starting to see cup marks where there aren't supposed to be any.

Log Text: This rock is quite easy to find if you have a GPA and an accurate grid reference. It is a a few yards south from the track across Stony Marl Moor from Ravenscar Beacon, and lies along a linear ditch. At the time of visit a small fire had cleared the vegetation around it and the cups and linear markings were easily visible. The rock is quite heavily ornamented and is one of the better Ravenscar rock art examples.

Brow Moor - Rock 80

Date Added: 4th Nov 2024
Site Type: Rock Art Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 26th Jul 2024. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 4 Access 3

Brow Moor - Rock 80

Brow Moor - Rock 80 submitted by johndhunter on 30th Oct 2022. Rock 80, site 05i, map area ‘E’ at NZ 96508 01226 - The end nearest the camera is the easterly end of the stone, October 2022.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is an excellent rock with interesting markings, well worth the effort of tracking down. It's a fair walk across tall heather from the track across the moor. You will need a GPS and accurate grid reference to find it, and will need to be prepared for a few scratches on your legs. The two cup-and-ring marks are bi-sected by a pecked line.

Burton Howe

Log Text: Burton Howe overlooks the Cleveland escarpment and has a marker stone on top. There are good views. It is right by the Cleveland Way and can be visited as part of a tour of other local sites.

Cheshire Stone (Urra Moor)

Date Added: 5th Nov 2024
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 11th Aug 2023. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 2

Cheshire Stone (Urra Moor)

Cheshire Stone (Urra Moor) submitted by johndhunter on 9th Jul 2020. Cheshire Stone at NZ 57729 02118 – Viewed looking southerly down Bilsdale, May 2015. Urra Farm is extreme right in image just below centre.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The Cheshire Stone overlooks Garfit Gap and Hasty Bank, and contains a natural series of hollows which Smith and Walker (2008) consider may have been enhanced by notching and addition of other cups and hollows in pre-historic times. This is hard to get to in summer due to bracken and lack of a direct path, but is worth the effort. It's a bit of a leap across a chasm to get on top but worth it. Personally I agree that the hollows look to have been extensively reworked by the hand of pre-historic peoples.

Danby Beacon

Date Added: 9th Nov 2024
Site Type: Round Barrow(s) Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 29th Jun 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 5 Access 5

Danby Beacon

Danby Beacon submitted by JimChampion on 30th Jul 2009. The mound on the left is the Bronze Age burial mound re-used in more modern times as Danby Beacon. The beacon sculpture on the barrow was erected the Danby Beacon Trust in 2008, and first lit on the anniversary of Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. The top of Beacon Hill, beyond the barrow, was the site of a major Second World War radar station.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The views from Danby Beacon are superb. The downside is that it is heavily visited, so you may have to put up with crowds. It's a pity that that barrow has been adorned with a modern creation. There is a trig pillar. It can be visited by car, bike, or on foot.

Drake Howe

Date Added: 5th Nov 2024
Site Type: Round Barrow(s) Country: England (Yorkshire (North))
Visited: Yes on 19th Nov 2023. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 2

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This is the summit of Cringle Moor, which is a long and fairly steep if excellent walk along the Cleveland Way. Excellent views and an easy path through the heather exists to the barrow, which has a well-marked Cairn.

Face Stone (Urra Moor)

Flass Brow Round Barrow submitted by Sunny100 on 19th Jun 2010. Flass Brow Round Barrow Nr Goathland, N.Yorks, at NZ.860024. A close-up view of the two standing stones.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This round barrow and marker stones is close to the layby on the A169. The whole area is replete with barrows and wayside crosses and this can be visited as part of a longer walk touring many of them. There is a good moorland view all around from the top of the barrow and the marker stones provide amusement trying to decipher the carved words.

Log Text: This is a very enjoyable standing stone. It attracts lots of coin-offerings, and there are some cup and cup-and-ring markings on one face.

Log Text: One of the easiest pre-historic sites to find on these moors as it is right by a track and quite prominent. There are various hollows and grooves in the top that may have been modified. There is a possible cup-and-ring mark on one side.

Hand Stone at NZ 59427 01513 – Whilst the crude hand at the top of this the south face of the stone, indicating to the east can still be made out. The writing below is now more or less illegible. R.H. Hayes in his 1988 book “Old Roads and Pannierways in North East Yorkshire” page 42 tells us that it says “ This is the way to Kirby” meaning Kirbymoorside. This photo was taken August 2018

Log Text: The handstone is one of the many interesting local features worth seeking out. It is right by the Cleveland Way and hard to miss. The markings are exceptional.
