South Yarrows Broch
Date Added: 9th Feb 2012
Site Type: Broch or Nuraghe
Country: Scotland (Caithness)
Visited: Yes on 18th Aug 2011

South Yarrows Broch submitted by pab on 18th Aug 2011. SolarMegalith's photo PID80083 - being of curious temperament, I just had to see what was in the dark patch of SolarMegalith's photo, so I opened it on my PC.
I was very surprised to be able to get this amount of additional detail from the image on the Portal: apparently able to see what was under the water!
Closer look - especially at the lower lines of stone - showed an excellent reflection instead. I found it interesting though how much more detail could be seen, even in a compress...

Country: Scotland (Argyll)
Visited: Yes on 18th May 2019

Carn Mor (Lismore) submitted by PAB on 18th May 2019. Carn Mor, Lismore.
We could not readily identify convenient access to the field where the cairn was located, so this is the best I could achieve.
The long walk back to catch the ferry meant I've had to leave this for someone else to capture properly!

The group of five Mamoas, or round barrows, are located along a lane running south from the Cha de Lamas 'Agricultural colony'.
This annotated screenshot of Google Earth shows the position of the five Mamoas. There is also a dolmen further down the lane, and apparently another Mamoa 200 metres north of the houses shown.

Huaca Huantille
Date Added: 21st Oct 2013
Site Type: Pyramid / Mastaba
Country: Peru
Visited: Yes on 21st Oct 2013
Huaca Huantille submitted by pab on 21st Oct 2013. Adobe bricks at Huaca Huantille. Stacked alongside the pyramid during the current excavation, these adobe bricks give a good idea of the material used in many parts of Peru.
Adobe bricks are made of earth with a fairly high clay content and straw and then only sun-dried, rather than being kiln dried. Only the very dry conditions make this suitable for such significant structures.

Site Type: Ancient Temple
Country: Peru
Visited: Yes on 3rd Nov 2013

Raqchi submitted by pab on 3rd Nov 2013. Temple of Viracocha, the Creator god.
This was once a major centre on Inca civilisation and religion.
This photo shows the main ancient temple wall, the lower parts being typical Inca cut and fitted masonry, while the upper section is made of adobe.
The roof tiles are a modern addition, to protect the adobe from rain and erosion.
