Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in Argyll

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features this legendary stone - see their page for Clach na h-ealea, Clachan, Lismore, Argyll. TNA point out that although the Scottish Royal Commission originally described this as a standing stone, it is in fact an erratic boulder of granite roughly shaped in the form of a cross. Their page carries a brief archaeology and history together with local folklore about the use of this stone as a sanctuary stone.

Also see Canmore ID 23090, which tells us that this is "a granite boulder roughly in the form of a cross stands about 60 metres south of the east wall of St Moluag's cathedral (NM84SE 5). It is 0.8 metres in height and in width it is 0.6 metres at the base and 0.4 metres at the top. The stone is called Clach na h-eala (the stone of the swan) and is supposed to have marked a boundary in connection with certain rights of sanctuary."

Clach na h-ealea (Clachan)
Clach na h-ealea (Clachan) submitted by PAB : Clachan stone. As noted in the description already posted by Ann T, the stone seems to differ from most of the rocks on Lismore - it is actually the same as the predominant outcrops we had seen on the far west of the Isle of Mull, facing Iona. Apart from that observation, I can't offer any contribution towards the debate about its origin etc. Photo & visit, May 2019 (Vote or comment on this photo)
