Log Text: An interesting tumulus. It is well covered by undergrowth and ivy so it is difficult to see its construction but there are a lot of loose stones around the edges that you can see so it may be that it is stone rather than an earth mound.

Log Text: Not as frequented as the nearby dolmen. Not really a path but there is a route through the trees so not difficult to find when you know it is at the top of the hill.

Garde Epée dolmen

Garde Epée dolmen submitted by TheCaptain on 28th Jul 2007. Garde Epée dolmen suffers from graffitti and rubbish, but is otherwise well looked after in a little clearing amongst the vines with its own sign. It can be found just to the south of the D.157 road, a couple of kilometres west of Jarnac.

Pierres Closes de Charas 1

Pierres Closes de Charas 1 submitted by thecaptain on 18th Jan 2006. This odd burial chamber can be found to the northwest of the historic Naval town of Rochefort, amongst the marshes of the Charente river estuary. It consists of an oval shaped chamber which has been carved out of a big solid block of rock, on top of which is a limestone capstone.

Log Text: Only a short walk to this tomb as our sat nav took us down a dusty track and then we only had to walk across a bridge and a field to see it. We did not get to the other one as it was late and we assumed that it was in the middle of a field of sweetcorn being harvested.

La Sulette dolmen

La Sulette dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 13th Dec 2005. This is a pleasant find, as it has been fully excavated and restored in 1989 to 1991, and is now found completely within its mound, a kilometre or so to the northwest of St Hilaire-la-Foret.

Les Pierres Jumelles

Les Pierres Jumelles submitted by theCaptain on 24th Jan 2011. The Pierres Jumelles, or twin stones, are both about 4 metres high, but that is where the similarity between them ends. One of the stones is a rounded block of lovely pink granite, while the other is a tall pointed grey stone.

Pierre Levée de Soullans

Pierre Levée de Soullans submitted by TheCaptain on 8th Jun 2011. In a little forest clearing beside the busy D. 69 road to the south of Challons, I found this stone because of the restaurant of the same name.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Don't stop on the D69. The wood is enclosed on the other 3 sides by small roads all of which have signs pointing to the Menhir. It is also a pleasant wood to walk through along the path. Once you get there it certainly is an impressive stone.

Kerbourg Dolmen 1 submitted by AlexHunger on 3rd Jun 2005. Very pretty 7 Meters long, 3 Meters wide downward slopping Allee Couverte, pointing South East. It has 4 large capstones. The rear appears to have a medium size chamber, while the rest appears to be the passage leading to it. It probably once had a tumulus. Saint-Lyphard.

Log Text: Well it is almost impossible to find now. We drove around for ages looking for this menhir and when we did find it we couldn't see it. Access is impossible. Barbed wire surround it on all sides and inside this enclosure is a mass of trees bushes and undergrowth.

Log Text: There is a sign by the road informing you of the presence of this menhir but no indication as to where it is. The trackway to it really does not exist any more. So just park the car and delve into the wood by the stream and follow the path until the stone is found.

Cairn Catto

Cairn Catto submitted by oldman on 4th Jul 2019. This is the 3rd of 3 pictures taken from the left end to the right end of the cairn.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The cairn is in a field of cows surrounded by double barbed wire fences. It is only possible to get to the first fence and take pictures from there. At least half of the height of the cairn is hidden by gorse so it is only possible to see the stones forming the top of the cairn.

Great House Camp

Great House Camp submitted by Andy B on 3rd Feb 2011. Hill fort topped with trees. Copyright Jonathan Billinger and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence

Log Text: We thought at first that we would not be able to get to view the fort as there is no path indicated on the OS map and the Great House seems to be very private. However when we parked nearby we found that there is actually a marked (in Welsh) footpath which passes by two sides of the fort. There is a high hedge along most of the path but one access point into the area of the set of four ditches and mounds. The main area of the fort is not accessible and used for grazing cows. The rings are however quite impressive.
