Peyrefitte
Trip No.1 Entry No.1 Date Added: 22nd Aug 2026
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: France (Aquitaine:Gironde (33))
Visited: Yes on 21st Aug 2026. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 3 Access 5

Peyrefitte submitted by thecaptain on 15th Jan 2006. Large menhir near to the Dordogne river in the commune of St-Sulpice-de-Faleyrens in Gironde.
This is said to be the largest standing stone in southwest France, (but not the tallest) and it is 5.2 metres tall, 3 metres wide and less than a metre thick, with the bottom part of it chipped away to make the distinctive shape.

Log Text: Brilliant sunshine made the stone dark on one side, and brilliantly white on the other. A magnificent sight despite the uninspiring surrounding of access tracks to nearby properties.
