Carwynnen Quoit

Carwynnen Quoit submitted by Andy B on 28th Jun 2016. RIP Sustrust's Founder and Heroine Pip Richards. Beverley Hollyoake wrote: Pip a much loved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully at Mount Edgecombe Hospice surrounded by the love of her family on Saturday 7th May 2016 aged just sixty five. Her family are deeply saddened by their loss, Pip was the bright spark in all their lives. They draw some comfort at this difficult time in the knowledge that Pip had lived a rich and full life on her own terms whilst enriching the liv...

Log Text: More than 10 years have elapsed since my visit to Castallack Carn Standing Stone. It is located at SW 44740 25374, between Castallack Round and an abandoned quarry. GPS navigation and persistence are required to find this stone hidden in shrubbery.

Castallack Round submitted by Bladup on 21st Jul 2016. Another view of the Large upright stones to the North East of the South East entrance at Castallack Round.

Log Text: One of my pet hates is a footpath off a narrow lane with no parking available. A footpath starts at Castallack Farm on a narrow Cornish lane. I parked carefully opposite the footpath in front of 2 houses. Follow the footpath NW for c. 350 yards to Castallack Round: depending on the season the SE entrance may be blocked by vegetation.

The Table Stone of Castallack

The Table Stone of Castallack submitted by Bladup on 9th Feb 2023. The Table Stone of Castallack, was it it's own standing stone, part of the standing stone in the next field to the west or part of a possible cairn in the next field to the south or even something else?

Log Text: I found this recumbent stone when visiting the nearby standing stone but was unsure of its antiquity. It looks like a naked capstone but there are no other stones in the vicinity and the ground is flat. I think the stone is too heavy to be moved so it is probably in its original position.

The Birchwood Monolith

The Birchwood Monolith submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Feb 2020. Slightly offset from the centre, looking south east. Birchwood Boulevard (to the rear) aligns clearly from the stone and path. Viewing the stone from the boulevard, the stone lines up exactly with the central road markings. Photo 23rd February 2020 with iPhone 6s. A large modern monolith with likely observable solsticial alignments framed via a road to the south. Around eight feet tall, the monolith's broad sides face north-north-west / south-south-east suggesting some solsticial or near sol...

Log Text: Despite the lack of nearby parking this modern standing stone is well worth a visit. The massive stone is beautifully framed by a horseshoe of trees planted on an earth bank.

Ballakelly

Ballakelly submitted by Kammer on 23rd Apr 2004. Ballakelly (SC321719) viewed from the south, with prone slabs in the foreground, the chamber behind them, and the orthostat to the right. Taken 27th August 2003.

Log Text: Ballakelly Chambered Cairn is in a field on the right hand side of the A25 from Douglas. There is a narrow gate to park in on a sharp corner at Ballakelly Farm. The stones are surrounded by a fence with a gate for access. The chamber and its immediately surrounding stones are impressive but the random circle of stones on the fence perimeter dilute the authenticity of the site.

Log Text: Meayll Hill Stone Circle / Chambered Cairn is a unique monument. It is apparently 6 double cist chambers arranged equidistantly on the perimeter of a circle. A visit is strongly recommended.

Cashtal-yn-Ard

Cashtal-yn-Ard submitted by TimPrevett on 24th Jun 2015. A low shot atCashtal yn Ard tomb, 31st July 2014, taking in the flowers and the mountains. Magnificent place. We were here over an hour and had it to ourselves. A very exposed location in hard rain and very lovely in warm sunshine, both of which we had in the time here.

Log Text: Despite the narrow single track road to Cashtal yn Ard and difficult parking this ancient monument is a must visit. I approached Cashtal yn Ard from the SE passing by a ruined cottage. It is one of the most impressive multi-chambered cairns I have ever seen. On my visit the site was well maintained. I was lucky to have half an hour alone with these intriguing stones in good weather.
