Recorded as having been found on 4th June 1888, beneath a stone platform in the churchyard which served as the base of a later medieval cross.

St Mary's Motte (Beaumont) submitted by Anne T on 22nd Aug 2017. Looking at the southern section of the motte, which has been partly cut by the modern road through the village. Pastscape says that the site may originally have been a Saxon or Danish settlement, then the site of turret 70a on Hadrian's Wall, then a Norman motte, finally being replaced by the church in the 12th century.

St Michael and All Angels (Isel) submitted by Anne T on 26th Jul 2022. Sundial now incorporated into the eastern jamb of the door into the church (southern side - inside porch). The notice on the noticeboard inside the porch tells us: "This dial was in use until the porch was constructed in the 15th century after which the three dials were made [incorporated into?] the left hand jamb of the south window of the chancel [outside'] ... until the dial became redundant the nave was used for educational purposes during the times shown on the dial".

The Corpus tells us this face shows: "the incised ornament consisting of a single horizontal line on which converge three incised lines from above and below." This is the famous 'thunder bolt' symbol.

Gosforth Cross submitted by Thorgrim on 30th Jul 2003. Probably the finest Anglo-Scandinavian carving in the north of England, this red sandstone cross has stood for over a thousand years in the churchyard at Gosforth. Depicting Pagan scenes of Odin, Thor and Loki as well as of Christ crucified, the mixed symbolism is intriguing. Inside the church are fine Viking hog-back tombstones including one showing the famous scene of Thor fishing for the Midgard Serpent. Gosforth in Cumbria is 12 miles from Whitehaven at map ref: NY 072036.

Image shows the detail from the north and east sides of the 15m cross. These sides are very well preserved.
The north side is divided into five compartments. In the highest and lowest are vines running in graceful curves and bearing foliage and fruit. Dacre Church submitted by nicoladidsbury on 22nd May 2005. St Andrew's Church - 9th Century Cross Fragment.
This is the smaller fragment, which is believed to date from the 9th century, was found in 1900 close to the Church and deep in clay. It is considerably damaged but some detail of the carving is still quite sharp. The least damaged face of the shaft, where the top has been broken off, shows two pairs of human feet. Beneath is a lion-like winged creature, with a large face and sorrowful eyes, with the head and part of the body of a serpent.

The 'Giants Grave' is a collection of ancient grave stones comprising two 11' high stone crosses and four hog-back stones. An excavation of the 'Giants Grave' showed a skeleton underneath with a sword. The four hogback stones surrounding the grave are said to represent wild boar he killed in nearby Inglewood Forest.

Edenhall Cross (Langwathby) submitted by Anne T on 6th Apr 2018. First view of the cross from the lane leading from Edenhall village to St. Cuthbert's Church. The River Eden runs 250 metres east of the cross. St. Cuthbert's church is 230m south east of the cross. The base looks very old, whereas the cross and shaft and head look as if they have been newly made, even though they were placed here in the 19th century.

Addingham cross submitted by nicoladidsbury on 15th Mar 2005. Near the entrance stands a well preserved Anglo-Saxon hammer-head cross, with four holes and carved scrolls (right).
In the porch of the Church is a Viking hog-back tombstone, two parts of a 14th Century Viking cross, and two coffin lids decorated with early Christian emblems
