Irons Well (Eyeworth)

Irons Well (Eyeworth) submitted by JimChampion on 28th May 2006. January 2006. A view downstream from the chalybeate spring on a dull winter's day. Red ferric oxide precipitates out in the water, giving it a very orangey hue. The waters join a stream which feeds Eyeworth Pond.

Clearbury Ring

Clearbury Ring submitted by JimChampion on 31st May 2006. Southwest ditch and rampart (right) at Clearbury, from grid ref SU15232432. The ramparts were planted with beech trees long ago, as was the fashion to "improve the aspect" of prominent landmarks. Clearbury is a univallate hillfort, meaning that it has a single ditch and bank.

Tenants Hill enclosure

Tenants Hill enclosure submitted by JimChampion on 3rd Jun 2006. The medieval dew pond on Tenants Hill, confusing labeled as a "hut circle" on the Ordnance Survey maps. Strong afternoon sunshine is not best for bringing out these earthwork features, but there is different vegetation growing in the pond (nettles?). The bank behind the pond is the southern side of the Bronze Age enclosure. In the distance (center) is Long Barrow Hill.

Twyford stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 5th Jun 2006. A view of the church of St Mary the Virgin at Twyford (Hampshire) looking southeast from Berry Lane. The present building dates from 1878, but there is supposed to be a stone circle beneath the original Norman tower's foundations.

Boscawen Un submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Picture taken looking North on a hot August day, just before noon. The shadow cast by the 'gnomon' affords little shade.

Chun Quoit

Chun Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking East, towards Chun castle (which can be seen the the left of the quoit). Impressive lichen on this side of the quoit. Recent rainfall meant that the chamber within was one big muddy puddle.

Chysauster

Chysauster submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking West from the settlement site, with the engine-house of the Ding Dong mine visible on the horizon. The site is incredibly well-kept, with just a few visitors late on this bright summer afternoon. Disappointing to find that the fogou has been blocked up for 'safety' reasons.

Grey Mare and her Colts

Grey Mare and her Colts

Grey Mare and her Colts submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Taken at noon over the wall/fence to the north of the barrow. One of several small concrete posts that surround the site is visible, presumably there to prevent any further ploughing of the monument. The arrangment of stones is like a smaller, more ramshackle, Waylands Smithy.

Gun Rith

Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Gun Rith

Gun Rith submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. The stone is still standing upright, with its base neatly set in concrete with a tidy wall supporting the earth bank behind. This may help to prevent toppling, but does give the site the ambience of a contemporary structure. About 3.5m tall, it is a particularly phallic menhir.

Kingston Russell Circle

Kingston Russell Circle submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Composite image, taken shortly after noon looking south-west. The field is currently being used as pasture, which means that access is muddy but at least the circle is not lost in crops. Lyme bay can be seen in the distance, and Abbotsbury hill-fort to the left of this.

Lanyon Quoit

Lanyon Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2002. Late afternoon sunshine gives a pleasant colour to this picture-postcard quoit in West Penwith. The almost-horizontal capstone gives a very ordered feel to this monument: is this an artifact of the nineteenth-century rebuilding?

Maiden Castle (Dorset)

Date Added: 19th Sep 2010

Visited: Yes on 31st Dec 2004

Maiden Castle (Dorset)

Maiden Castle (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Looking west along the southern flank of this impressive hillfort, towards the Hardy Monument. The ditches are not as deep as they once were, and the ramparts were once topped with wooden pallisades. These formiddable defences forced the Roman army to take the slightly 'easier' option of attacking via the south-eastern entrance.

Merry Maidens (Circle) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Composite image of this popular stone circle, looking east. There were several visitors to the site on this pleasant summer afternoon, but none were standing near the stones when I took these pictures.

Mulfra Quoit

Mulfra Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. August 2004. Taken looking west at sunset. We only just made it to the quoit before the sun set, but were rewarded with spectacular ambience. Running up the bracken-covered hillside from the Try Vally, the quoit was hidden from view until we got very close to it. A lot of anticipation, capped by a pleasant surprise. Its not obvious where to park for access from the Try Valley, there is a shallow lay-by at SW454356.

Nine Stones (Dorset)

Nine Stones (Dorset) submitted by JimChampion on 31st Dec 2004. Boxing Day 2004. Composite image. A bright sunny morning, but the trees keep this little circle in the shade. Only eight stones are visible: the ninth is being engulfed by the roots of the large beech tree on the left of the picture.
