Castle Piece submitted by JimChampion on 3rd Apr 2006. View northeast from on top of the rampart at SU19970890 - the point being that there is not much to see of the earthworks here. The rampart is very slight and there are only traces of an external ditch. From this point the rampart curves round to the left. The fallen tree on the left has toppled from the rampart into the enclosed area. Go on... use your imagination!

I have circled the lump on the horizon which is all that remains of this barrow (looking at almost end-on). According to the Magic map there are several round barrows below in the green field.

Irons Well (Eyeworth) submitted by JimChampion on 28th May 2006. January 2006. A view downstream from the chalybeate spring on a dull winter's day. Red ferric oxide precipitates out in the water, giving it a very orangey hue. The waters join a stream which feeds Eyeworth Pond.

Clearbury Ring submitted by JimChampion on 31st May 2006. Southwest ditch and rampart (right) at Clearbury, from grid ref SU15232432. The ramparts were planted with beech trees long ago, as was the fashion to "improve the aspect" of prominent landmarks. Clearbury is a univallate hillfort, meaning that it has a single ditch and bank.

Tenants Hill enclosure submitted by JimChampion on 3rd Jun 2006. The medieval dew pond on Tenants Hill, confusing labeled as a "hut circle" on the Ordnance Survey maps. Strong afternoon sunshine is not best for bringing out these earthwork features, but there is different vegetation growing in the pond (nettles?). The bank behind the pond is the southern side of the Bronze Age enclosure. In the distance (center) is Long Barrow Hill.

Ibsley Common barrows submitted by JimChampion on 10th Jun 2006. Honestly, its a bowl barrow. Located on Dorridge Hill at grid reference SU17881161, it is 12m in diameter and less than 1m high. Its northeast edge (on the left) is being worn away by users of this track across Ibsley Common. The English Heritage scheduling notes say that it is constructed of compacted gravel.

Gorley Hill submitted by JimChampion on 13th Jun 2006. Panoramic view of the southwest corner of Gorley Common, looking south. The hill fort once occupied this area, but gravel extraction in the 1950s and 1960s removed any evidence of the earthworks. A well-grazed plateau remains, surrounded on some sides by large embankments (the original ground level); the birch trees in the distance are growing on such a bank, and the corner of a bank protrudes from the right.

Cheriton Long Barrow submitted by JimChampion on 27th Jun 2006. Looking north at the side of the long barrow mound, which crosses the photo from left to right beyond the oilseed rape. The footpath across the field is on the other side of the barrow, this view is from the field gate on Lamborough Lane. The barrow is covered with grasses and so stands out in this field. It will probably be much more obvious when the oilseed crop has been harvested.

Monument to a Horse submitted by JimChampion on 28th Jun 2006. The largest of the standing tetralithons, and the one that many people notice as they hurtle past on the A272. At this time of year it is almost hidden by the surrounding nettles on the verge of the road.
