Castle Piece
Castle Piece submitted by JimChampion : View northeast from on top of the rampart at SU19970890 - the point being that there is not much to see of the earthworks here. The rampart is very slight and there are only traces of an external ditch. From this point the rampart curves round to the left. The fallen tree on the left has toppled from the rampart into the enclosed area. Go on... use your imagination! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Probable hillfort in Hampshire

Probable iron-age hillfort in the New Forest enclosing 4.5 acres, now surrounded by the oak trees of the Roe Inclosure.

Approaching the site from the south along a forest track it is not immediately obvious when you pass through the likely original entrance to the "hillfort". There is a single enclosing rampart (roughly circular) and this is very broad and low; the external ditch is almost completely filled in. The rampart is most prominent on the eastern side of the track, rising around one metre above the surrounding hillslope. There is a good cross-section of the rampart where it is cut through by the track on the northern side of the fort.

The fort is on the west-facing slope of a gravel spur, and lacks significant natural defences, unlike the nearby forts on the terrace edge overlooking the Avon valley (Frankenbury and Castle Hill, Burley). Castle Piece's small scale is comparable to the other hillforts in the New Forest area and does not suggest extensive settlement by iron age tribes.

Access The site is within the Crown lands of the New Forest (managed by the Forestry Commission) and open to the public. Easiest approach is to enter Roe Inclosure at Amie's corner and head east along the cycle route - a map is essential as you might otherwise miss it!

Castle Piece submitted by JimChampion : A cross section of the single rampart at Castle Piece, looking northeast from SU19950900 where a north-south track (in the foreground) has cut through the earthen bank. This is the only place where the rampart is particularly obvious. There are many other banks and ditches in this part of the Forest, although the more modern ones (relating to forestry) are narrow linear features with an obvious di... Came here today and not sure if we found it or not!
It was pretty dark by the time we got there so I'll try again another time.

A horde of 8 gold belgic staters were found in the adjacent Milkham Inclosure, while a further 3 gold staters were found and never declared in a stream near Castle Piece, they have never been declared, one day I hope to look at them and find out what tribe they belong to, I'm hoping for Durotriges as I believe the eastern edge of the tribal boundary was the Test and not the Avon which is usually quoted.
