Joseph Reed Shell Ring

Joseph Reed Shell Ring submitted by IanMu4966 on 26th Jul 2026. The best possible picture of the Joseph Reed Shell Ring available without illegal bushwhacking or drone support. The elevated sea grapes along the midsection of the frame broadly correlate to the western rim of the ring, I believe.

Log Text: Purposing to find the shell ring, I kayaked across Peck Lake about 1.4 miles (2¼ kilometers) to the Jupiter Island tract of the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. From there, I crossed the barrier island via a passably-managed footpath, then proceeded north up the beach for several hundred yards.

The only sign of there being an earthwork is a section of elevated sea grapes at the coordinates. Needless to say, bushwhacking through sand dune canopy and mangroves in a NWR is heavily illegal, and uncomfortable besides, so I did not investigate further.

It was still worth it, if only for the scores of sea turtle nests all over the large, empty beach.
