Grotenberg

Grotenberg submitted by Harald_Platta on 28th Mar 2021. The Grotenberg is rock face in Bochum (North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany). This kind of a high rock cliff is unusual for the surrounding area. It has been speculated whether it might have been a part of a pagan sanctuary. The name (Grote = the Great = Odin) could support this possible connection. Platta 2020

Grotenbach

Grotenbach submitted by Harald_Platta on 23rd Aug 2017. The Grotenbach is a well and small stream in Witten (North Rhine-Westphalia/Germany). Its name might connect it to the Germanic god Odin. The area is hardly accessible in the summer months because of the dense vegetation. The picture shows the Grotenbach a few meters downstream of the well exit, which lies near the houses on the left side of the picture. The streambed is indicated by the relatively free space in the middle of the picture. The photo was taken in August 2017. © Platta ...

Grosser Helmersberg

Grosser Helmersberg submitted by Andreas on 18th Oct 2010. The barrow a few years ago. (photo from an information-panel at its smaller namesake) The barrow's height is still about 3,25 m, and the diameter about 28 m. It's also known as Hermannsberg (= "Hermann's Mountain"). But who is/was Hermann? Possibly Arminius? Or a saxon duke from the Billung-dynasty? A local farmer? Another candidate? Without knowing a related legend everything is pure speculation.
