The barrow has now been temporarily enclosed by an electric fence to keep the sheep off.

The Mold Gold Cape found by workmen quarrying for stone in a burial mound in Mold, Flintshire, North Wales in 1833. In the centre of the mound there was a stone lined cist containing an inhumation burial and the cape was found on the shoulders of the skeleton, pieces of sheet bronze were also recovered which may have formed a backing to the gold cape. I visited and photographed this site sometime between 1997 and 2001. futher to the English Heritage description of the site, I seem to recall that antiquarian excavation was across the centre of the barrow and there was also a shallow trench longitudaully on the barrow - so forming a cross shape.

Lyneham Long Barrow submitted by h_fenton on 29th Jul 2007. Lyneham long barrow from the south and also a view beneath the bushes.
There are now a small number of sheep grazing the barrow and the fields that it is in so there is less low level plants than you might usually expect during the summer months and you can crawl around beneath the hawthorn bushes on top of the barrow if you are agile enough!.

Judging from the patterns of weathering on the top of the stone it has been clipped by the hedge cutter a number of times although it looks like the overall height of the stone has not been reduced by more than a couple of centimetres.
at some stage in the history of this stone a piece of iron has been inserted and held in place with some lead the iron has been broken off and has become very corroded, it is too small to be a gate hinge. careful examination of the...
