Abu Simbel Temple of Ramses II submitted by h_fenton on 20th Jan 2008. A small carved panel in the interior of Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel. Flash photography is not allowed in here (I seem to remember that tripods are not allowed either). Very yellow lights are used inside the temple and I have reduced the yellowness in photoshop. This is the sharpest photo I have of the interior of this temple, other shots are either out of focus and/or have camera shake. Camera: Canon Powershot G2, lens 35mm (35mm equiv). The bank on the the north eastern side of Lyneham Camp (The Roundabout) has recently been cleared of trees and scrub (previously it was pretty impenetrable). Using some ranging poles (not in this photo) to guage the height of the bank - in the foreground area of this photo the bank stands to a height of 1.2metres from the interior and 2.1 metres from the exterior ground levels. This temple was commonly attributed to Ceres for many years until votive offerings to Athena were found nearby. The temple has six front columns and Thirteen side columns, these outside column capitals are of the doric type whilst those on the inside were of the ionic type, none of the interior columns are still standing but many fragments of these colums and their capitals were found. The interior is split into two naves and with the absence of any religious features this led early historians and archaeologists to suggest that this may be a civil building possibly Roman in date, this led to the temple becoming known as the Basilica.
