Log Text: I'm quite used to seeing offerings (?) left at prehistoric sites such as crystals, beads, coins etc - which are often placed into holes in the stones. This afternoon (24/11/2010) when I visited the Whispering Knights, it looked like the stones were in the bottom of a wishing well for the sheer number of coins deposited on and in them. Two Pence seems to be the most common deposition.

Wildshaw Burn

Wildshaw Burn submitted by h_fenton on 4th Dec 2010. One of the more prominent stones at Wildshaw Burn Stone Circle. 23 September 2010 @ 6.42am
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Visited Wildshaw Burn stone circle as it was getting light, occasionaly surrounded by hill fog; the ground oozing water after heavy overnight rain. Most of the stones (I found 22) were submerged in puddles, a few others above the peaty ground were lying on their sides. Apart from a lost pair of glasses there were no obvious signs of modern human activity on the site - but still it was not exactly serene, on one side there is the hum of great electricity pylons and the other the M74 motorway.

Not the easiest site to find, but it is where it is marked on the map

Log Text: This time I arrived at Chysauster half an hour before closing time, I wanted to get some more aerial photographs, I got permission. Kite and camera rushed into the air, I spent the next 45minutes thoroughly photographing the site, unfortunately the sun was still fairly high in the sky so some of the earthworks didn't show as well as they might otherwise do. staff at the site were relaxed about closing time and by the time I had finished there were still a couple of other visitors wandering around. Nice Ambience.

Log Text: Arrived at Chysauster early before the site was quite open, got my free entry with my CADW life membership card, and got permission to fly my kite here. A nice relaxed time, light winds, I was amazed everytime I brought my camera back to the ground how different and understandable everything seemed from the viewpoint far above my head. On the ground you walk through the courtyard houses; peer into the different rooms, but you don't really get the spatial relationship of everything, but the view from the camera hanging beneath the kite just gives the different rooms, different houses, spaces between all a context and enhances the understanding of this remarkable site.

Drumtroddan Cup and Ring Markings

Drumtroddan Cup and Ring Markings submitted by h_fenton on 25th Sep 2010. A Kite Aerial Photograph of the main outcrop at Drumtroddan, although the outcrop is larger and the rockart goes beyond the extent of this photograph I have cropped the picture to what was visible at this early time of day. 17 September 2010 @ 8.48am

Log Text: Visited this site in the morning with strong low sunlight which was fantastic for showing up the cup and ring marks. I stayed for a while as the sun rose, highlighting further cup and ring marks. Unfenced out in the field a short distance to the west of the main group a few more ring marks were visible where the grass has worn away.

With the permission of the farmer, I flew my kite here to take some aerial photographs of the rock art. There were a couple of cows in the field but they were only mildly interested in what I was doing.

King Arthur's Round Table

King Arthur's Round Table submitted by h_fenton on 1st Oct 2010. King Arthur's Round Table. I tried to fly the kite here but the wind was too inconsistent to safely get the camera high enough. Here instead of a kite I used a carp fishing pole, with a camera attachment on the end to lift my camera higher (6-7 metres). 10 September 2010

Knock Rock Art (1)

Knock Rock Art (1) submitted by h_fenton on 1st Oct 2010. Knock 1. below the Gavin Maxwell otter memorial. A week or so before the autumn equinox shortly after sunrise a finger like shadow of the piece of rock on the outcrop passed right through the centre of the cup and ring mark. Because the light was low it was difficult to effectively photograph. I waited until the sun was a little higher and brighter then I put my finger close to the lump on the rock that casts the shadow - to indicate the shadow across the circle. At one point the end...
