Holywell Brook (Rorrington)

Holywell Brook (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. On the far north end of Stapeley Hill, two springs close to each other emanate from the hillside, converging into one brook. For centuries these springs were venerated, even as late as the 19th Century. On Holy Thursday, there would be a procession here, and the springs decorated and dressed. Ritual dropping of pins into the water, drinking of a brew made from water and sugar, and eating of cakes were observed. All this followed by a fair in Rorrington village itself. Castle Ring (Rorrington)

Castle Ring (Rorrington) submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Jul 2005. One of a number of monuments called Castle Ring; this one near Rorrington just north west of Stapeley Hill. Just one ring surrounds this hilltop, with glorious views. Access is not obvious, so follow the route on the map, and when going through the wood, mind your footing. Tripping hazards abound. A lovely remote place. Even though, while I was here on midsummer eve, a man on a quad bike came riding on a track to the south. If I recall correct, he was the brother of the landowner. We discuss...

The Wrekin

The Wrekin submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Jan 2005. Lookin to the North East, between the outer and inner ramparts of The Wrekin. The path enters the inturned ramparts to the central area; the trig point and toposcope sit upon a Bronze Age Cairn, which is hardly in evidence. Another, more slight rampart is visible to the left of the picture, before the hill becomes more rounded. See main entry - click on the blue text to the left of the picture for more information.
