I have visited· I would like to visit

SumDoood visited on 14th May 2016 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Much of its ambience comes from the Arran backdrop, but it's an intriguing site, including the near surroundings, and about all of which I'm sure there is much more to be learnt.

Dunagoil fort, Isle of Bute occupies a headland which is virtually inaccessible except from the inland side. It was defended by a timber-laced stone rampart, vitrified after catching fire. For a nearby site rather easier to visit, if less impressive, see Scalpsie Dun just sent in by Skryabin

The vitrifaction is best seen at the north-west corner of the fort where a small part of the wall still stands and a length of the outer face visible. Elsewhere it has tumbled down, masses of vitrified rock being found on the slope.

It measures 90m by 22mOn the south side a 240 cm wide gap in the wall, half-way along, may have been an entrance. The fort was probably occupied for 300 years, from 200 BC to 100 AD
A great many artifacts including polished stone axe heads, ring-headed pins of bronze and iron, an Early Iron Age brooch, glass and lignite bracelets, coarse pottery, a Late Bronze Age stone mould, crucibles and spindle whorls have been found during excavations and are now in Rothesay Museum.
