Fyfield Down submitted by winnits on 6th Jul 2002. Fyfield Down - original home of the Stonehenge Sarsen stones - still very much unspoiled with an almost prehistoric feel, filled with Sarsen Stones, Thistles and Heather.

Log Text: Stunning atmospheric landscape filled with naturally occurring sarsen stone. It can be reached via Marlborough, Avebury and The Ridgeway. The Polisher's Stone is situated within the reserve in a field adjacent to The Ridgeway, I also came across Devil's Den here whilst hiking and what looked to be some kind of settlement. A great place for a lengthy dog walk, however, mind the cows when they're roaming as I had a few hairy incidents with them.

Log Text: I cycled here from Swindon along The Ridgeway at Liddington. It's a gorgeous place to visit on a warm summers day. The site is also a nature reserve so plenty of wildlife and wild flowers. There is a quiet road close by that has barely any cars go by so very peaceful. There's seven barrows in the field that are in fairly good condition, but there is also some along the race track next to it that are visible from the road.

Log Text: A wonderful site to visit, its quiet with spectacular views of Basset Down. From the summit there is access onto the White Horse Trail and the Ridgeway is visible with its distinctive tree clumps. There are many interesting features atop the summit including what looks to be a motte and bailey.
