Penrhos-Feilw

Penrhos-Feilw submitted by DrewParsons on 28th Oct 2010. The lovely pair of standing stones photographed on a fine day in late September 2010. The stones are located behind some houses along a short track from the roadside sign. September 2010.

Log Text: Easy to find and parking for a couple of cars on lane, a kissing gate, a stroll across the grass and there they are.
Nice couple of tall standing stones that are photogenic, framing a mountain in one direction and modern farm buildings in the other.
Nice place to visit but be aware you are potentially under the gaze of the farmer at all times so behave accordingly.

Log Text: I’d read the reviews of this and seeing no easy parking I quickly pulled up took a couple of long range pictures and moved on. The industrial setting is what it is and there are plenty of better sites to visit.

Log Text: I pulled over in an industrial area and snapped a couple of long range pictures of this stone. Sandwiched between the trunk road and some high fence with extra barbed wire establishment it’s a bit lost in the modern landscape.

Log Text: Park in the lay-by and over a style, up a barbed wire corridor path to the corner of the field where this much repaired dolmen resides.
Apparently someone set a fire under the capstone which cracked it and the repair work is a bit unsympathetic but hey-ho it’s better than it could have been. There is a ring of concrete posts at ground level showing the extent of the mound.
The fencing is more cattleproof than beautiful and subtracts from the experience a bit. If you’re passing it’s worth stopping by.

Log Text: Very photogenic dolmen which was once part of a passage grave, the spread of which is to the east 20 metres. Easy to find, parking in lay-by, over a style and across a field. It’s behind bars but it’s easy to photograph through them. Nice place, no one else about, canny views, all good.

Barclodiad-y-Gawres (Anglesey) submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Apr 2004. A look at the dolmen, which is the top of the cruciform section, inside Barclodiad. As with many dolmens, the capstone almost seems precariously placed.

Log Text: This important tomb is a tourist attraction. It is very well preserved by a concrete dome, locked bar gate and strategically placed lighting. A lot of “roofed” sites I’ve visited have suffered worse for the roof than being exposed but they got it right here. I would have happily paid a small fee to go inside and I heard they do have open days.
You can just see one of the zig-zag marked stones through the gate.
The location is exceptional. Rocky shoreline with sandy bays. A nice walk for most abilities. There are other sites nearby. You could bury me there and I’d rest happy. Plenty parking of the pay and display type nearby and a freebie a little up the road which I used and did a circular walk, taking my time and enjoying.

Log Text: I tried to access this site from SE and the footpath sign is removed, the gate hidden and the path impassable after the first hundred metres. Using the map and navigating by eye I went around about and all over. I found the place in the end after a whole lot of adventures and when I tried to return on what was definitely the footpath it was terrible. Not just overgrown a bit, but wear thornproof clothing and bring a machete, seriously!
The site itself is wonderful. Below an over grown hill with ravens circling and other wildlife it is somewhere special to spend a while. It must have been some tomb in its day and the ruins have charm and are photogenic. Didn’t see a soul.

Bryn Gwyn Stones

Bryn Gwyn Stones submitted by petelovespurple on 24th Apr 2012. I'd been to see Castell Bryn Gwyn, noticed the stones marked on the map, when I got there discovered there was a dig going on, they had found the base of one of the destroyed stones plus stone holes for other stones, I'd have thought there would be more info here...... more photos in a set of the same name on my Flickr photostream

Log Text: This was the pick of my walk. It is tucked away in a hedge, overgrown with briars and I didn’t realise it was part of a circle until I looked on here. One of the stones is a massive upright twice my height at least. The other is smaller and laying at an angle.
I spent a while here just marvelling. No signage and you don’t see it until you’re upon it in summer when the leaves hide it a bit.

Log Text: Easy to find along a footpath. It disappears into a garden and has obviously been used in multiple ages up to present day. In the rabbit spoil was Victorian china and glass and other modern building rubbish even quite low down, and natural as well.
Very little real information on signage. Lovely blackberries and a nice place to spend time, I had it to myself both on my outward and return journey.

Caer Leb

Caer Leb submitted by TimPrevett on 14th Apr 2004. Caer Leb is a rectilinear settlement enclosure, with double ditches and banks defining an area 200 feet by 160 feet. Some have interpreted it as a mediaeval homestead with moat (indeed, some of the ditches get very water logged). However, finds of a 3rd Century AD brooch, a 4th Century denarius of Postumus, and Roman pottery and quernstones date the site much earlier than mediaeval. Like the Din Lligwy Settlement, the CADW guidebook says it possibly has its origins earlier than the 3rd Century, ...

Log Text: I parked in the lay by and had a quick look on the way to walk to other sites. It’s a square or rectangular earthworks, looks a bit swampy in places but was dry enough when I passed.
Not really my area of interest but I’ll look at owt if I’m passing.

Bryn Celli Ddu Cairn

Bryn Celli Ddu Cairn submitted by AerialCam on 20th Jul 2018. The Late Neolithic/Early Bronze age cairn from the air. Copyright: Adam Stanford The new results also show that there was activity at a huge burial mound to the south of Bryn Celli Ddu, some 500 years later than the pit circle. The effort put into building this burial cairn must have been immense, as some of the stones used in its construction would have weighed over one tonne. The activity at the burial cairn shows the continuing importance of this landscape to prehistoric people over 1000...

Log Text: This reconstruction of a burial mound with a ditch is easy to find, has parking and is along a well made footpath. It is a bit of a tourist attraction but I expect there are quieter times.
You can go inside and it is said to be aligned with the mid summer sun rise but actually it aligns with modern farm buildings when the sun would be rising at the solstice, I checked on an old school compass and the alignment is correct.
A piece of stone marked by zig-zag patterns, which was part of this, is in the National Museum of Wales, according to the signage.
I came, I had a look about, took pictures and left. It was a busy day and it was nice to see so many respectful folk visiting but not somewhere to chill in August.

Log Text: A great site, very easy to find up a short well made path from the village, parking may be an issue at times but I got lucky.
What I love about this one is that you get to see the stone spread of the double dolmen tomb, so often the first thing robbed away, and the lovely way the site is maintained, which for a site in between houses, is very good.
Informative notice board and nice trees. The smaller dolmen is wonderfully complete showing the bone depositary well. A must visit site if you’re passing.

Ffridd Newydd

Ffridd Newydd submitted by TimPrevett on 18th Sep 2007. Some disparate stones based around a very wide circular earthwork are all that could be made out here. One is put in mind of an enormous embanked circle.

Log Text: After visiting the nearby dolmens I struck out to what it says on the map “stone circles remains of”. A good stroll over a nice old bridge and up a rural private lane (bridle way) which eventually peters out to a field track with stiles and views and loads of features like ruined barrows and natural rocks. When I arrived I had to check the map several times to make sure I was actually there. Very little to see of the circles, a possible earthworks is vaguely visible and some stones that possibly were part of a circle. It was a nice walk, on a lovely day so not a waste of time.

Cors y Gedol

Cors y Gedol submitted by Dragonwolf on 25th Aug 2025. I visited this delightful place on 22/09/25. It was pure chance as I visited the double dolmen in the village and got my map out to see what may be nearby and 20 minutes later I was here. Just follow the lane up the hill, round a large house and there is a cool car park which is £1.50 all day (cash honesty box) and it’s a short walk on a metalled lane. I got the hawthorns in full berry and fantastic views of the coast and mountains. Spent a while, then wandered off in search of stone circles ...

Log Text: Great site. Easy to find if you can read a map. Car parking within 250Metres at £1.50 for all day with a cash honesty box. All on tarmac from car park, I guess good disabled access as it is right beside the not busy private lane through one gate.
Great views both inland of mountains and across the coast and a place it’s nice to just spend some time. It wasn’t busy but there were others visiting. No litter and previously reported illegal stonework has been removed. Very photogenic and lots of other stuff to look for in the surroundings.
