Din Dryfol Burial Chamber
Din Dryfol Burial Chamber submitted by TimPrevett : 2nd Photo (Vote or comment on this photo)
Chambered Tomb in Anglesey

NE Aberffraw. My visit here was a complete coincidence! Roadworks at the time diverted us past this, and the children were asleep being one to keep an OS map open on my legs while my wife drives this was an opportunity I could not miss!

Signposted from the lane, the footpath goes through a farmyard. The farmer asked about my business (a broad Yorkshire accent he had!), and happily directed me but admonished me not to climb upon the sizeable rocky outcrop which lies behind the chamber. The stones are huge here, and like Ucheldref & Presaddfed, there is some distance between the remaining stones.

A good description of the archaeology of this site can be found in the Frances Lynch book Prehistoric Angelsey published in 1970 and revised in 1991.

The monumnet is said to be similar to Trefignath in some ways. The chambers are arranged in to a single gallery and the stones were set into the surface rather than into stoneholes which made identifying other uprights difficult when excavations began in 1970. Interestingly the portal stone of chamber 3 was wooden which is "rare but not unknown".

This is a very strange site. The vast majority of burial chambers seem to have been built to make a statement in their landscapes - there are too many examples to list. But Hendre Waelod is different.

The chamber is located on a NE/SW axis in a plateau'd cleft of a large outcrop (Din Dryfol). With its cairn the burial chamber may well have filled the cleft thereby making itself part of the outcrop but without really standing out.

The only angle you could have seen the chamber from is the NW (the direction you walk from the farm) but then it would have been dwarfed by the main outcrop behind it.

The tomb was built in several phases.
