Breiddin Hillfort

Breiddin Hillfort submitted by TimPrevett on 24th May 2004. From the left Breiddin hill (also spellt Breidden) with New Pieces, centre and Moel y Golfa, right. Viewed from the south. The hillfort on Breiddin hill made national news in July 2000 when the culmination of a decade of diligent deforestation showed the remains of this settlement, hidden for over 1500 years. At well over 1000 feet above central eastern Powys (formerly Montgomeryshire), not far from the Shropshire border, the fort has a panoramic position. As one would expect, the extremel...

Log Text: a fair hike to the summit (Rodneys pillar which sadly has been condemned as too decrepid to repair) took me 3 hours and only 1 1/4 to come down. great long distance views from top. the ramparts are mostly in woodland but the main entrance can be seen as the path goes through it. the full size of them can only be appreciated by a visit-they stretch about a mile from NE to SW on the SE side.
quite an awesome build.

Mitchell's Fold

Mitchell's Fold submitted by Orpbit on 21st Mar 2025. The Lion Roared at Mitchell's Fold stone circle on the Equinox and I roared back. After 14 years of researching the site I finally got the one image I really wanted. Almost perfect weather, yet I was the only one there to observe sunrise on this Spring Equinox of 2025, except for a local couple doing a morning walk, who caught up with me walking down the track back to my car. Pity we didn't bump into each other before the sunrise, as I had spare eclipse glasses too. And for me it beat even Stone...

Stapeley Hill Cairn

Stapeley Hill Cairn submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2004. A cairn on Stapeley Hill; see main entry for full details - click on blue text link to the left of the picture. A composite shot looking towards Corndon Hill, and Mitchell's Fold (out of view). It was snowing hard at this point on Midwinter Solstice Eve, and even I was questioning my sanity about being in this exposed, beautiful and dramatic landscape. A biting wind meant I did not stay here for any longer than necessary to get a shot, but on subsequent trips, it will be worth spending tim...

Moel Ty Uchaf submitted by DJMace on 9th Nov 2020. Very nice example of a cairn circle in a spectacular location and well worth the hike. A straight walk up the hill along a rough track after passing through two metal gates. Continue on up and the circle is on left hand side. You won't be disappointed.

Log Text: in the ignorance and folly of youth i was just a passenger in a car passing, betwixt music festivals. we stopped. this was before any fences. I attempted to climb the gradient, and managed about 10 feet. it seemed very precipitous.
