Beeston Castle submitted by vicky on 7th Jun 2002. The entrance to Beeston Castle in Cheshire where a 13th Century Castle was built on top of an Iron Age hillfort (GR: SJ538592 ). Excavations in 1978 revealed that the Medieval wall of this outer gateway was constructed on top of a prehistoric rampart with external ditch and counterscarp bank.
Prehistoric artefacts including bronze axes and implements, clay moulds and crucibles for casting bronze and a large amount of prehistoric pottery have been on the site of this 4 hectare hillfort.

Log Text: you have to be a tourist for this one-National trust. some deep ditches/high banks. models in the visitor centre show the development of the site from Bronze age -Iron age to medieval. a proper good palimpset. they sell fruit wines and spirits in the shop very yummy. very long distance views from the top.

Log Text: as with many such sites it is the excavation drawings that tell the story. It sits in a timescale overlapping with the neolithic saltworks, and 1500 years before the nearby timber 'wossit'

The Cockpit submitted by LivingRocks on 18th Mar 2005. A panoramic view of the Cockpit Stone Circle which according to Magicmap ‘includes a circular kerbed stone bank 2.8m -11.2m wide and up to 0.5m high which encloses an area approximately 27m in diameter. There are 27 (?) standing and recumbent stones set largely into the internal face of this bank, thereby creating the stone circle. Log Text: please do not climb the farmer's stone wall as it is precarious, dangerous and they have enough to do without mending walls all the time. there is a gate just along the way and another gate into the field where the round barrow is.

White Hag Hill Stone Circle
The circle has eleven stones, and an outlier. It sits on the hillside above an enclosed area containing earth banks, looking very much like an abandoned hillfort, although there is nothing marked on the OS map. Also a fantastic ancient spring called "Kings Well".
