Stoke Flat submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Froggatt Edge stone circle (aka Stoke Flat), Derbyshire GR: SK249768

Traces of dry-stone walling in the northern entrance suggest that it may have been deliberately blocked at some time in p...

Black Hill Cairns
Date Added: 3rd Dec 2024
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Oct 2024. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 3

Black Hill Cairns submitted by AngieLake on 28th Jul 2010. A lovely view of Cairn 4 with the moors in the background, looking approx west here.
I kept thinking of Bruce Chatwin's 'On the Black Hill' while exploring here. It was a brilliant book, but set on the Welsh borders, not Dartmoor. He'd have loved this place, though.
[Oddly enough, his home and the book were featured on the BBC 4 'Britain By Bike' episode tonight, 27th July!]

A familiar aspect to those who travel north up the M3 from Southampton (just before the controversial Twyford Down cutting). Only one of the cows in the foreground has noticed me standing precariously on a gatepost to take this picture.
