Maen Castle
Date Added: 1st Dec 2019
Site Type: Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2019. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 3
Maen Castle submitted by JimChampion on 31st Aug 2008. The Maen Castle headland, viewed from the north. The chasm in the foreground is the aptly named Castle Zawn, containing the wreck of the ship RMS Mulheim. The defences of the cliff castle can be seen on the left side of the photo. There is a counter-scarp bank and ditch, then a berm, then a wall made of large granite stones packed with rubble. No traces of a settlement exist within the defended area, which is very exposed to the sea and prevailing winds.

Standing just to the south of the cross, trying to highlight the older socket stone (between the more recent plinth and the smaller, modern socket stone which supports the shaft). This is supposed to predate the use of this monument as a market cross.
