Willy Howe

Willy Howe submitted by DavidRaven on 9th Jun 2003. Part of the 'Great Yorkshire Barrows' group. To say that these have been called by some, 'the ancestors' of the mighty Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, you'd think a little more would be made of them! Reckoned to be as old as Duggleby Howe, and a similar size: seven and a half meters high and thirty six and a half meters in diameter. Attempts at finding its secrets in 1857 and again thirty years later yielded nothing. A pit about nine feet deep was discovered but was bereft of objects or human ...

Girdle Stanes

Girdle Stanes submitted by nicoladidsbury on 31st Mar 2004. This is an evocative large stone circle, surrounded by ancient hawthorn trees which are covered in large lichen. Half the circle has been eroded by the river running by leaving only a semi circle. The stones stand on a low earth bank. Close by are the Loupin Stanes. We visited this circle on a beautiful hot day in summer, there was no one else around, it was a very peaceful place to be. Nether Largie South submitted by Fairycake on 26th Sep 2020. Looking towards the cairn from the south with the large cist in the foreground. This is by far the biggest cist I have seen. There are several inserted into earlier monuments near to here, apart from this, showing these sites continued to have significance over a long period of time.

Nether Largie standing stone

Nether Largie standing stone submitted by caradoc68 on 18th Aug 2012. This standing stone is in the middle of a field, a short distance of the footpath. The farmer does not like you being there and might put a angry looking bull in the field to put visitors off. Cant find a lot written about this stone or why it seems to be leaning at 45 degrees and pointing to the southeast.

Ri Cruin

Ri Cruin submitted by caradoc68 on 23rd Feb 2012. This lovely cairn dates from the Bronze Age and is pretty new when it comes to the Kilmartin landscape. Hidden away in some trees just of the beaten track with its two kist's, this Cairn has a lot to offer with its large Kist's and its rock art of axeheads and possibly a caving of a boat in one of these kists !!.
