A nice neat little stone circle on the moors below Belstone Tor on the common to the south of the village of Belstone, Devon. This circle is almost certainly the remains of a round burial cairn, and traces of the burial chamber can be seen within the circle. This is a view looking north

Oxenham Arms

Oxenham Arms submitted by TheCaptain on 26th Apr 2004. Oxenham Arms, South Zeal, Devon SX651935. An enormous and magnificent menhir built into the wall of a tremendous pub on the main street in the village of South Zeal, Devon. In fact, the pub is believed to have been built by monks in the twelfth century around the menhir. As the pub website says "A very interesting part of the house is the small lounge behind the bar. In this room, set in the wall, is a monolith and the theory of archaeologists is that the monastic builders placed the...

Park Gate submitted by seaholly on 26th Feb 2015. 10.11.04 sketched diagram of Parkgate Stone Circle, SK281685, Beeley Moor.I got there walking from Rowsley towards Chatsworth down the B6012 turning right at Beeley. Its marked on the OL24 OS Explorer Map 1:25000. Its similar in ambience to Ewden Beck Stone Circle or The Seven Stones of Hordon Stone Circle niether of which is near by foot. However, near by is Hob Hurst's House Barrow SK287692, and the very difficult to find,at least back in 2005, Gibbet Moor North stone circle SK282708.

Difficult to know where to start !. Visit Gorafe absolutely- the landscape is phenomenal, the collection of dolmens unique. if you can get the leaflet from the visitor centre (now open at 12 And 5 (not 12-5) you can do planned walks although only about 40 are visible - each one numbered on the ground. Thevisitor centre absolutely go but it is bizarre - huge amount of money spend and difficult to describe I won't spoil it but do support them !! Directions to the amazing local petroglyphs were vague so check the route first at 12 before you try to find them - we didn't, sadly.

Log Text: This site is all the more amazing because there’s no signposting or tour and you just have to wander round the rock shelters hunting down the paintings.

Once you are in the right place ( put penas de cabreras in google maps) you can park near a path and head up the hill. You find the shelters eventually.

The obvious ones are on wikipedia etc - the ‘ leaf’ or centipede, the comb, the figures but there are about 30 plus shelters.

Really worth a visit - idyllic spot.

Log Text: The large recumbent stones can be seen , many covered in moss and peat. Recent cutting work evidence. Those must have been a grand avenue when they were upright, assuming they were. The east to west orientation at the end of Butterdon row, which leads to it, is interesting. They have a fantastic view of Plymouth Sound too.

Piskey’s Hall – The Fairy’s Fogou

Piskey’s Hall – The Fairy’s Fogou submitted by coin on 3rd Nov 2013. So... Getting to this site is a welcome voyage, arriving at the gate (higher than a normal one) I read a friendly sign- warning me of a bull... So the landowner obviously doesn't want people visiting this site. Climbing over the gate I am affronted with another welcoming feature- electric fence. Slipping under the offending wire, and edging around the field keeping an eye out for the bull of terror, I approach the mound if earth and stones. When I reach it, I am presented with another electric f...
