Gawton's Well
Date Added: 16th Aug 2011
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 9th Jun 2011. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4
Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue. Very atmospheric woodland and castle like folly neaby too. I wouldn't be surprised if therein lies a connection with the well.
The spring lies within a large circular wall, in varying states of collapse, and within that is an elipse of yew trees - reminiscent of the ring of trees in "Nightmare Before Christmas". If this were Wales I'd start thinking this was th...

Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 14th Aug 2010. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 4

The Winking Man submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Nov 2006. The Winking Man - a natural convincing anthropomorphic rock formation on Ramshaw Rocks at SK 02021 62362. This is in North Staffordshire on the west side of the Leek - Buxton Road. The route immediately below the rock outcrops is on a Roman Road, and remains one of the most accident prone deadly A roads in the country. Parking is to west of the Rocks (good layby at SK 01746 62012), then a fairly easy walk up to near the summit, and the Winking Man is on the east side. Tripping hazards and drops...

Bawd Stone submitted by vicky on 2nd Sep 2001. The Bawdstone, possible dolmen, near Hen Cloud, The Roaches, Staffordshire GR: SJ009620
This so called ‘dolmen’ was described by antiquarian J.D. Sainter in his book ‘Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield’ in 1878:
"At a short distance south of Rock Hall, there may be observed on the opposite side of Hen Cloud a block of gritstone, which upon approaching it, is found to be rested or balanced, in the first place, upon a short edge of rock and then upon two upright and pointed pilla...

Bosley Cloud (1) submitted by PaulM on 19th Aug 2002. Bosley Cloud Stone
This stone is located SJ905636 on the back slope of Bosley Cloud, a hill in Cheshire.
It is not known if this stone is prehistoric standing stone or a natural boulder but it has been utilised as a marker (a cross is carved into the top of the stone) for the Cheshire/Staffordshire county boundary which splitsthe Cloud. If it is natural it is fortuitously placed but it is a stone out of keeping with those in the immediate area.
A track runs right beside it.

Sevenways Cave submitted by TimPrevett on 29th Jul 2006. This is the most picturesque view from one of the many ways into the cave.
Seven Ways cave - so named because of 7+ entrances into it. Sited above and to the west of Thor's Cave, it is accessed by returning to the path just before the last descent to access Thor's Cave, and then heading up! Be careful - the drops come up unexpectedly, and there are some *big* drops. Also minor shafts and limestone fissures are not infrequent, so consider your route to avoid a smaller fall.

Elder Bush Cave submitted by stu on 23rd Sep 2004. SK0978 5488.
Access to the cave is relatively straightforward. Follow the path from Thor's Cave round to the back of the hill. The cave is quite high on the crags. Look for a lone Elder bush, the cave entrance is below and a little to the side of the bush.

St Helen's Well (Rushton Spencer) submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Aug 2007. The roadside situation of St Helen's Well, just up the road from The Royal Oak, past the "Rushton" sign, immediately after the property named "Spring Bank" (bit of a giveaway!) on the right. Some steps lead down to a deep chamber, if not overgrown!
