Log Text: This site is part of an excellent, if steep and bumpy, walk in the low Pyrenees. Excellent views throughout. Interestingly, the entrances to some of these dolmens seem to relate to local geology.

Log Text: This site is part of an excellent, if steep and bumpy, walk in the low Pyrenees. Excellent views throughout. In this case, the entrance aligns with a quartz (or hard white rock of some sort) outcrop, shown on the photos.

Log Text: I found this rock art site. I didnt know what i was reallz looking for, but found what could be some cup marks, and a cross, which i guess is more recent... here are some images of features I found within 10 m of the map marking. There was no signage, despite proximity to the megalithic walk.

Log Text: This dolmen, like the others in this valley, was very difficult to find, even with an advanced GPS. All paths that were once in the area are overgrown with sharp, thorny bushes and are easily lost amongst boulders, trees, drops and slopes. It was a very difficult and sunny descent. There are however pairs of stacked stones left by someone who occasionally visits some of these sites. Expect a difficult scrabble if you visit, bring water and tell someone where you are heading... it is real ankle breaking terrain... Still, the dolmens are pleasing, and bold, red on white signs can be seen on arrival... this can be useful as the bushes seem rampant.

This particular one is adjacent to an ephemeral river, which from erosion looks to be extremely fast occasionally. When i visited, midsummer, it was full of stagnant, frog filled ponds and thick, thick vegetation. Using the river for access probably wasnt worth the hassle. VERY difficult site to reach.

Log Text: This mound is seriously beautiful, surrounded by very dense forest with a thick covering of fallen branches and thick undergrowth. A good 200 m from a poor, sandy bridal trail renders this site difficult to access, but worth it, if you are a fan of mounds!

Lousberg Flint Quarry submitted by Harald_Platta on 4th Apr 2016. The Lousberg was a Neolithic flint quarry in Aachen (North Rhine-Westphalia). It was used as a from ca. 3500 - 3000 BC.
The picture shows raw flint stones found at the foot of the Lousberg (Veltmanplatz). They are displayed in the LVR Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn.

Log Text: The Lousberg Flint Quarry is on top of a very steep hill in the centre of the city of Aachen. There is a car park quite near the top. Much of the summit of this feature was apparently used for making flint tools, and there are some excellent information boards (in German) on the summit now, descirbing both the geology and use in both the local and regional setting.
The position on the map is incorrect for the main mining waste piles, which are intermixed with the trees 100 m north west of the Lousberg summit, rather than 200 m south east of the summit, as indicated on the map. The information boards are likewise some 200 m north west of the indicated position.
Within the exposed roots of the trees many apparently worked fragments of flint are exposed amongst the leaves and detritus, and after 10 or 15 minutes walking about it is difficult to not spot at least a few which look like failed attempts to make axes! In any case, the site is beautiful and worth a stroll if visiting this city.

Bargloyer Brookbäke Grab (4) submitted by Martin_L on 27th Mar 2012. From the NE. The hollowed-out and robbed round barrow most probably dates back to bronze age and contained no megalithic structure.
It is situated at the SE edge of a small wood with dense undergrowth. The barrows' diameter is approx. 18m, height up to 1,2m. It has a central pit most probably caused by historic excavations or perhaps collapse of an internal wooden structure. Of course this can only be clarified by archaeological examination.

There are approx two 20m long ditches (i assume they result from removal of the megaliths) oriented East-West. Between these ditches the terrain is elevated (I assume these are the remains of the barrow). Two large, but partly covered megaliths are visible. One in each ditch.

Log Text: The two megaliths noted by Martin L remain visible, though I did not note the barrow structure as clearly... there is some rusty barbed wire fencing in the vicinity, so be careful of this whilst exploring.

Log Text: This site is excellently presented. A recent information board is at some distance, so not interfereing with the pleasing ambience. Also, a nice picnic bench is provided and some small car parking space.

Visbeker Braut submitted by Martin_L on 18th Jan 2011. The SW-side narrow side. It is built of 4 enormous kerbstones, all appr. 3m high.
Like at similar sites, the kerbstones at the narrow sides are the largest.
The other short side in the NW is partly destroyed, but two large corner stones are still in place.
These larger kerbstones at the short sides of long barrows are often called “Wächter” (means: “guard” or “guardian”) in Germany.

Nevertheless due to the partly undulating surface of the granite erratic it is hard to show all cup-marks even when using several light sources. Schmeersteine Huegelgrab (1) submitted by Martin_L on 25th Apr 2012. From the SW. Large barrow of slightly irregular shape, appr. 24m diameter, height 2m. Situated in a pathless area of a woodland, with partly dense undergrowth. It is located to the North-east of Schmeersteine Großsteingrab.
Many trees are growing on the barrow. The surface of its southern edge is partly grown with grass, most other parts are like the forest soil. There are several dens (probably badger) inside the barrow. The largest entrance just on top of it.
Dating of barrow is uncert...

Log Text: August seems a poor time to visit, at least in 2021 - the site was totally overgrown with stinging nettles. The information board by the small road was clearly visible, and an excellent bench for taking a break during a cycle, but as you can see from my image, details were very difficult to make out.
