Brent Knoll Camp submitted by TheCaptain on 27th Apr 2004. Brent Knoll Hillfort, Somerset. ST341510.
This wonderful steep sided, flat topped hill rises 450 feet out of the Somerset Levels not far from the sea in Bridgwater Bay. Legend has it that it was created by the Devil when he was carving out Cheddar Gorge, and threw a handful of rock out towards the sea. Geology has it that this limestone outcrop of the Mendip hills dates from the Jurassic times of 300 million years ago. Personally, I always think it looks a bit like the hill out of Close Enco...

Ham Hill (Somerset) submitted by AngieLake on 1st Jun 2006. This is a (composite) view of the summit of Ham Hill from the monument area, looking back at the small quarry (centre), with the modern stone circle far left. There are ridges in the western edge of the hill (right) that look like original Iron Age banks to me. Maybe I'm mistaken? Jim Champion might know this!

Ham Hill stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The modern stone circle is surrounded by the old quarry's spoil heaps - this view, looking west, is from on top of one of these heaps. My umbrella-wielding assistant gives an idea of the scale, and an indication of the weather conditions.

Visited: Would like to visit

The Devil's Bed and Bolster submitted by JimChampion on 18th Apr 2007. In the foreground are the stones that presumably formed part of the end chamber in the tomb. Beyond are the stones at the entrance. The cut logs show that there has been some clearance of woody plants from the remains of the barrow mound. Signs on a nearby fencepost indicate that this barrow is alongside a 'conservation walk' - a phrase usually used for a permissive path around an area of natural/historical interest. Thankfully there weren't too many nettles beneath these trees - I was wearing s...
