Rollright Stones

Rollright Stones submitted by AngieLake on 4th Jul 2005. Rollright Monster??? This weird stone would look good in 'War of the Worlds'! On my first visit, I was stunned by the shapes of some of these gnarled and twisted stones. Here are two views of the tallest of the 'King's Men', taken after the Cotswold Pagans' ceremony on 19th June 2005.

King Stone Round Cairn

King Stone Round Cairn submitted by AngieLake on 4th Jul 2006. The King Stone viewed from near the brow of the hill to its north, and a cairn-like circle of stones that were possibly in the area of the tumulus mentioned in the legend. Unsure if these have always been in this position. The Kings Men are across the road behind the trees, to the far right of this view.

Whispering Knights submitted by AngieLake on 25th Nov 2006. The Whispering Knights discussing the visit of Aubrey Burl on 19th June 2005. It was a *very* hot day, and Dr Burl and other important people were still cooling off in the marquee by the Kings Men, having walked to see these stones at the end of their new pathway to declare it 'open'.

Arminghall Henge

Arminghall Henge submitted by AngieLake on 8th Nov 2007. This plan caught my eye because of the horseshoe shape of the posts that used to stand in the centre of Arminghall. I wonder if the builders of Stonehenge were influenced by this site? In 'Circles & Standing Stones' by Evan Hadingham [1978 edition, where this pic was found], he says that the site is carbon-dated to 3400 BC.

Bleasdale submitted by AngieLake on 14th Sep 2004. This is the (north?)western half of Bleasdale wooden circle. My brother is 6'1" tall, for comparison. This is a rare timber circle, where the posts have been replaced by concrete markers.

Hambledon Hill hillfort

Hambledon Hill hillfort submitted by AngieLake on 12th Oct 2005. A composite picture of Hambledon Hill, taken from the SE of the hillfort. (Excuse the difference in tone!) Sadly, I didn't have time to explore and cattle were roaming freely in its central area, but it was thrilling to see the well-preserved ramparts.

Grey Mare and her Colts submitted by AngieLake on 6th Nov 2005. The fallen stone of the facade of Grey Mare and Her Colts, with field gate not too far away for escape route when the cows come running, as they did when I visited! In the distance there are several hillforts. I managed a visit to one - Eggardon - later that day in May.

Knowlton Rings submitted by AngieLake on 6th Nov 2005. This area of the henge seemed very mystical, probably an original entrance between the two yew trees when the church was in use?
