Browne’s Hill
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Portal Tomb
Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Carlow)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Browne’s Hill submitted by AngieLake on 22nd Aug 2005. Browneshill Dolmen photographed in July 1999. This huge capstone is the heaviest in Europe, weighing about 150 tons according to the site noticeboard. The brown heritage noticeboard at the layby next to the R726 (find it on the right opposite a garage, about 2 miles outside Carlow going east) has the Irish name too: 'Dolman Chnoc an Bhrunaigh' and the English 'Brownshill Dolmen' underneath. (The spellings vary locally). There is gate here and a fenced lane leading to the dolmen, which you can...

Gournay-Sur-Aronde
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: France (Picardie:Oise (60))
Visited: Yes on 13th Dec 2008

Gournay-Sur-Aronde submitted by AngieLake on 13th Dec 2008. The placement of human and animal remains in the enclosing ditch at Gournay-sur-Aronde. Deposits of weapons were also carefully placed in the ditch.
[Drawing after Jean-Lewis Brunaux].
This comes from Mysteries of the Ancient World, edited by Judith Flanders, (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1998).
Can't help wondering if the ox-burial outside Bryn Celli Ddu is a similar 'Druid' ritual monument.
Maybe King Arthur's Hall was too?

West Kennet Avenue
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 29th Nov 2004

West Kennet Avenue submitted by AngieLake on 29th Nov 2004. West Kennett Avenue - This is my version of "andyb456"'s 'Jaws', viewed from the inside of the avenue. As you can see, he has quite a few holes, and you have to wonder whether they - especially the larger one at wrist level - were significant. I recently asked if anyone has any idea why this particular shape of prominently angled stones (there's one in Callanish's avenue too) were placed where they are. Was there a moon, sun, star alignment for instance, at a particular time of the year? Perhaps...

Avebury
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 6th Jan 2006

Avebury submitted by AngieLake on 6th Jan 2006. This stone is near the ENE henge banks at Avebury. Though it's in the segment where the Cove stands, it is one of the furthest from that feature.
As it was hot and sunny the day after Summer Solstice I made the effort to walk right around the banks barefoot and saw parts of Avebury that I didn't know existed.

Cuckoo Stone (Wiltshire)

Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 10th Dec 2006

Cuckoo Stone (Wiltshire) submitted by AngieLake on 10th Dec 2006. A twin shot of the western end of the Cuckoo Stone near Larkhill on 5th December. In the top close-up pic you might notice a round indentation at bottom right of stone, behind a tuft of grass. Don't know if this is significant, or just man's damage.
This was taken around 3pm, looking towards Woodhenge.

Durrington Walls submitted by AngieLake on 13th Jan 2007. The eastern section of Durrington Walls showing a raised bank running diagonally from upper left to lower right. The patch in the field middle right is the excavation area I think. The River Avon lies just to the right of this. (6th Dec, about 10.30am)

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 25th Jul 2007

Oldbury Castle submitted by AngieLake on 25th Jul 2007. Not a perfect compilation, but gives an idea of the beautiful contours of the hill below Oldbury Castle at Cherhill. You can see the horse, the monument and the Iron Age hillfort.
[The rape is 'late' compared to crops here in Devon, which had gone by early June.]
This was taken early evening 7th July 07 [7pm?/7/7/07!] by the A4, en route to Avebury. I had wanted to climb up there one day, but didn't get around to it.
(Sorry about the quality. New photos tend to be a bit sticky, too!...

West Kennett Long Barrow
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: England (Wiltshire)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Aug 2007

West Kennett Long Barrow submitted by AngieLake on 3rd Aug 2007. Stone 23 stands on the right-hand side of WKLB end chamber. (Piggott and Atkinson's excavation plan in 1956-57 gives numbers to stones.)
I didn't notice any special features in these stones (see also No.s 21 and 22) when taking the photos, but from this angle a long face can be seen. (Long nose near right of pic, and small round eyes above, with small - 'o' - mouth lower right.)

Bratton Long Barrow submitted by AngieLake on 13th Aug 2007. Looking at the barrow from the west end is deceiving, you'd never credit how long it is.
Here you can see how it lies on the northern-facing slope near the top of the hill, inside Bratton Camp fortifications.
